Jake and Leah met when Jake moved to Sioux City and started 4th grade in Mrs. Jensen's class at Mater Dei. They immediately became close friends. They continued to be close all through middle school with the same group of friends. Freshmen year at Bishop Heelan Catholic School, Leah asked Jake to the TWIRP dance which was their first dance together.

Jake asked Leah to become "official" on her 16th birthday sophomore year of high school and in September 2019 they celebrated 6 years together!

Jake proposed on September 15, 2018 at the Northwest Missouri State football game. After winning the game 63-0, the Bearcats huddled up on the Bearcat paw and helped Jake pop the question. Lots of planning went into this proposal as Jake's family had to sit the whole game with Leah and contain their excitement while Leah's parents sat on the opposite side of the bleachers in order to hide from her since they were supposed to be at home in Sioux City, IA. Leah's grandparents drove from Texas to surprise the couple as well. The whole thing went off without a hitch!
