Jamie grew up overseas in Hong Kong and graduated from UC San Diego. She is impressively well-traveled, having been to more interesting places than the Dos Equis man. She is also a vegetarian and wears gloves when cooking raw meat. After college, Jamie pursued several years of immunology research before attending medical school. Between us, Jamie is obviously a much bigger nerd and will swoon over the corniest of jokes, particularly if they involve dinosaurs. Her second weakness is chocolate, which serves as a frequent (and accepted) bargaining chip in our relationship. In her spare time, Jamie saves lives and is currently in her 2nd year of general surgery residency at Brigham & Women's Hospital, with plans to pursue a career in pediatric surgery! Yup, she can be as ferocious as a honey badger and remove your colon, too. Jamie's other special talents include: being able to locate a Target store on her iPhone faster than any other human, being able to pinpoint the closest dog park in her immediate vicinity, and Jeopardy (her minor in archaeology is clutch). She also enjoys 90s TV shows and can be found watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer when she's post-call. If you see her giggling on our couch, she's probably watching a puppy video from YouTube.
Brent was raised in Austin, Texas. He graduated from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas and insists that we decorate our house with longhorns. The first time I met Brent the list of interesting things he had done and enjoys stood out. He's a black belt in tae-kwon-do and a former national competitive golfer and door-to-door salesman. He's been sky diving twice and ran with the bulls in Pamplona for kicks. Though he says I'm nerdy, he taught organic chemistry and MCAT classes during college and has an endless repertoire of corny jokes. Brent loves fast cars and used to race something called a Cobra mustang that he gets nostalgic about (I originally wrote that he can identify any car by the sound of its exhaust but was informed that after market modifications make that impossible, so he can identify them by their headlights). He is currently in his 2nd year of Plastic Surgery residency at Harvard (I know, right?) with plans to focus on hand surgery. We struck a deal that he gets to suture up any injuries on our children's faces, otherwise the honor is mine! Things that Brent won't tell you about himself: he is unwaveringly kind. He rarely gets mad, and when he does the faces he makes are hilarious. He is brilliant and has an incredible memory (I never win any arguments). He has an incredible work ethic and is completely devoted to the people he loves.
1. We fell in love during the middle of our intern year texting corny jokes back and forth to lighten up our work days. Jamie's favorite:
Why can't you hear a pterodactyl going to the bathroom?
Because the 'P' is silent!
2. We got engaged during our 2nd weekend off together in residency. Ever. We clearly made the most of it.
3. We are competitive with each other. We made a bet that whoever scored higher on our annual surgery exam would get to chose the name of our first child. Jamie is pushing for a rematch...
4. We love to dance and will frequently be found two-stepping around our living room. An activity made easier by the fact that we have yet to purchase a coffee table...
5. There are weeks that we spend a combined 180+ hours in the hospital, but we somehow always manage to call/visit the other person each day.
6. Our favorite shared food is pickles. We average about 2 jars/week.
7. Brent has been secretly infiltrating our apartment with Texas paraphernalia since we moved into our new apartment. He disguises them as "gifts" for Jamie
8. Our favorite places in Boston include the commons, the public library, the Boston public market, and the Coolidge Corner Trader Joe's.
9. We're going to Belize for our honeymoon!
