Our Wedding

Jen and Tim’s love story is a powerful testament to growth, mutual respect, and overcoming deep differences. Jen, a rural, white Catholic woman with a stable, predictable upbringing, fell in love with Tim, a Black atheist man from a different background. Despite their starkly different life experiences, their love grew stronger over the years, founded on respect, acceptance, and an unwavering commitment to each other’s personal development.Jen, with her spontaneous energy, taught Tim the joy of travel, community engagement, and embracing the fun in life. In return, Tim, a calm and logical introvert, grounded Jen with his thoughtful perspective, helping her become more present, assertive, and confident. Their relationship became a beacon of mutual refinement, with each bringing out the best in the other while accepting their differences.Their journey began at Cedar Springs Hospital in 2008 when Jen noticed Tim’s quiet confidence. Despite her attempts to connect with him, Tim, unsure of her high energy and positivity, initially resisted her advances. But fate intervened when they found themselves at the same nightclub. Jen’s boldness led to their first kiss, igniting a connection that would grow through the years, albeit with on-and-off periods.The pivotal moment came when Tim sent Jen a text confessing his love and asking for another chance. Jen, unsure, made a list of things she wanted from their relationship, like more dates, excitement, and engagement in social settings. Tim, willing to meet her needs, accepted her desires with a simple, "I didn’t know that is what you wanted." This openness helped them grow closer, culminating in a significant milestone when Jen convinced him to move in with her in a tiny room with a group of strangers. They proved their love could withstand challenges and continued to build their future together.As Jen pursued medical school, Tim made the difficult decision to move to rural Ohio to support her. This period tested their relationship, with Jen dealing with personal struggles and Tim trying to find his own sense of purpose. But through hardship, their bond only deepened. They supported each other during the most challenging times of their lives—grappling with societal issues like the murder of George Floyd and the COVID-19 pandemic.In the end, Tim’s realization of the importance of creating a life—a unique human being—led Jen to make the decision to have a child. She believed that love meant supporting the other person’s growth and happiness, which ultimately led them to parenthood. Their journey now includes 15 years of love, 18 eventual years of parenting, and the shared goal of continuing to evolve together, dreaming of future milestones like moving back to Colorado Springs and growing their family with a hypoallergenic dog.Through it all, they make each other better people. Tim teaches Jen to stay calm, simplify life, think critically, and discern truth, while Jen encourages him to embrace the joys of life. Their partnership is rooted in love, selflessness, and an ongoing commitment to each other’s fulfillment—showcasing the power of love to transform and elevate two very different individuals into a united whole.
