Sean was in his last year of undergrad, and Jennifer in the middle of hers. They both were becoming Resident Advisors at UC Irvine in the Middle Earth Housing Community.
They first met at the meeting where Current RAs passed down to the new RAs. Everyone was new to Sean at this point but Jennifer saw a new face she hadn’t seen before.
Sean first noticed Jennifer at the Engineering Prom where he noticed her in her flashy green dress. Ryan Garcia was the first to formally introduce them, and the story goes from there.
That entire summer, Sean and Jennifer would hang out during RA training. When asked “Who is your RA crush?” Sean immediately said “Jlai of course” in a joking tone, as to not give away his secret.
The first time they hung out alone without the other RA’s was when they were buying costumes for Freshman Orientation. Their colors were Orange and Yellow respectively, so they went shopping and decided to go as Bert and Ernie in matching costumes.
Sean and Jennifer shared a lot of memorable moments such as playing basketball together, serenading each other, making fun of each other and even breaking up their first Freshman Party together.
It was Christmas 2017 at Sean and Jennifer's house. Sean and Jennifer's family all met up at their house in Hayward, where the two Mothers talked about doing a joint family trip to Hawaii. Sean saw this as an opportunity to surprise Jennifer with the proposal. The two families have done trips together before, traveling all the way to New Orleans together, so a family trip wouldn't be out of the ordinary.
The planning for a joint family trip to Hawaii was underway. Jennifer invited her family, and Sean invited his. Sean didn't tell Jennifer's family that this is where he plans to propose because he wanted the proposal to be a surprise and couldn't risk letting too many people know.
Everyone in the families were able to go except for Jennifer's sister. Sean mentioned multiple times "Hey Jessica you should really try to make it to Hawaii" insisting multiple times that she attend this trip. Finally she asks "Why? Are you planning on proposing?" So she was the first to find out from Jennifer's family.
Sean wanted to follow tradition by asking Jennifer's parents for their daughter's hand in marriage, but he would have to find a way to travel to Southern California and visit her parents without it being obvious.
Sean and Jennifer were planning to fly down to Southern California for Jessica's Birthday. Usually Jennifer books Sean's tickets to fly down to Southern California, but this time she had to let him book it himself since he was no longer her companion on Southwest. Sean saw this opportunity to "accidentally" book it the day before Jennifer flew down. Sean has had some pretty close calls with almost missing his flight, going to the wrong airport, forgetting his ID and Passport, and forgetting to book Jennifer as a companion on his flight, so booking the wrong day wasn't out of the ordinary for Sean.
Sean flew down the day before Jennifer and was able to get dinner with Jennifer's Father where he asked for his daughter's hand in Marriage. He also asked Jennifer's Mother the next weekend as she wasn't able to make the original dinner.
With the Father's blessing, he was now able to ask for Jennifer's hand in marriage at the family trip in Hawaii.
While planning for the Hawaii trip, Sean wanted to surprise Jennifer with the arrival of his Nieces, Brother and Sister. However, all of them would be on the same flight, and it would be a weird "coincidence" that they all just happened to be on the same flight, so Sean's Mom told Jennifer that the family trip would also be a Graduation Celebration for the two nieces graduating.
Finally with everything set, the only part was hoping that no one would let the secret slip. On the flight over, all of the family was on the same flight, and Sean was going to propose the question as soon as they all made it to the house. At the house, Sean's Mom, Step Dad, Dad, and Grandma were all helping setup the scene.
When the Families arrived, everyone headed over to the front porch where the "Graduation Celebration" was about to start. When everyone was ready, Sean asked Jennifer a very important question. No not "Do you want to get a dog?" but instead "Will you marry me?"
