Luis grew up in the Dominican Republic, where years of hard work and sacrifice for his medical career led him to the United States. Jennifer, on the other hand, was born in the US, where she too spent years of hard work and sacrifice pursuing her medical degree. These two parallel paths ironically crossed in the least expected place: Residency.
Jennifer was a first year resident, while Luis was finishing his last year and planning to move for fellowship. Luis swears he noticed Jenn early on but they never really crossed paths. Elvis — Luis’s older brother — initially met Jennifer at work and after several shifts together, suggested that his younger brother “check out the first year named Jennifer… Ustedes pueden ser muy buena pareja.” Luis, the kind of brother who listens to elders advice, listened better than he ever had before. And well… a quick hello followed by a playlist of dembow began this unexpected twist of fate.
Luis's patience mixed with Jennifer’s understanding established a strong foundation. Each formed a trust that left no room for jealousy and instilled open - honest communication, eliminating potential arguments. His love for adventure along with her spontaneity created a laughter and joy that distance couldn't break.
During one visit, Jennifer arrived sick. Luis worked, cleaned (a bit), and cooked for her. Once better, she cleaned (a lot) and organized (a lot more) in an effort to show her gratitude. Luis later asked her to run an errand while he was stuck at work. When Jenn returned, she opened the door and was greeted by Luis – with roses in hand, petals on the floor, and candles lit around them. He handed her a card to read aloud and when she looked up, there he was – down on one knee, asking her to marry him. Because after months of contemplating the perfect proposal, he realized there was nothing more perfect than a simple moment between him and her.
As our chapter of Residency closes and new beginnings await, we eagerly hope to celebrate this special “I DO” surrounded by our loved ones.
