The new Kansas City street car connects Union Station to City Market. It is a short drive from the Fairfield Inn hotel where rooms have been blocked. They have a shuttle that can take you to Union Station where you can catch the street car to Power and Light District and City Market. There is no cost to ride the street car.
Union Station was a train station built in 1914 that was once a bustling train station full of restaurants and shops. It was fully restored in 1999 and now contains two restaurants, a railway exhibit, planetarium, and an interactive science center.
City Market t is located on the Street Car line and is home to a wide array of dining options and local vendors. Each Saturday morning there is a farmers market where you can purchase fresh produce, fresh flowers, and specialty products all locally grown or made.
The Steamboat Arabia (http://1856.com/) is also located in City Market. The steamboat sank near Kansas City in 1856 and was not discovered until 1988. Because it was buried completely underground and protected from light and oxygen the contents of the steamboat were perfectly preserved. It is the largest collection of pre-civil war artifacts in the world and contains clothes, shoes, tools, and even food that was still edible at the time of discovery.
Kansas City Power and Light District is located in downtown Kansas City and is also on the street car line. It contains over 50 unique restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues.
The Country Club Plaza is 15 blocks of restaurants, bars, shops, and a movie theater.
