Jenny and Joel's story begins the way all great romances do: with a mutual friend insisting, “I know someone you have to meet.” Joel’s first thought? “Here we go again.” After all, he’d been on enough setups to last a lifetime. Jenny wasn’t exactly sold either — when her friend Monica (also Joel’s teaching partner) said she had someone for her, Jenny responded, “I don’t have time for this.”

But then pictures were exchanged. Joel saw Jenny’s smile, and Jenny saw Joel’s kind eyes. Suddenly, both of them were willing to give it a chance. A few weeks of phone calls and texts later, they agreed to meet for a casual coffee — short and sweet, just in case it was a dud.

Enter Deeper Roots Coffee in Oakley, Cincinnati. Joel arrived early and sat on a bench outside. Jenny, running a little late, had already dropped her purse in the parking lot (scattering her life across the asphalt) and was flustered as she hurried over. She spotted the bench, saw a man waiting, and rushed up apologizing for being late.

The only problem? That man wasn’t Joel.

Joel, who had stepped away to stretch his legs, returned just in time to see Jenny talking to a very confused stranger. He couldn’t help but laugh, which made Jenny spin around in horror. She realized her mistake, turned ten shades of red, and tried to stuff her words back in her mouth. The stranger chuckled, Joel waved, and Jenny did the only thing she could do — laugh at herself.

Inside, over lattes, time flew. They talked for hours, discovering that conversation was effortless and the connection was real. By the end of the date, Joel asked if Jenny would like to see him again. She said yes. Joel walked home, called his mom, and announced, “I just had a first date with the woman I’m going to marry.”

Since then, they’ve been building a life together filled with travel, laughter, a new home, a very spoiled dog, and lots of coffee dates. They’re both planners at heart (though Jenny definitely takes the crown), while Joel is more go-with-the-flow. Together, it just works.

And to think — it all started with a bench, a mistaken identity, and a lot of laughter.
