The First Conversation

Our love story began on December 13, 2013.&nbsp;Jeremy was a few months into his first job out of college at the ESPN&nbsp;Radio affiliate in&nbsp;Ithaca, New York. Becca was studying away in her first year of graduate school at Ithaca College, working on her Doctor of Physical Therapy. Our relationship started&nbsp;with a simple back-and-forth conversation using the online dating website&nbsp;OkCupid:

"I must say, you have great taste in movies. The Goonies is one of my all-time favorites as well! Are you a football fan? Watch any of the games this weekend?"











Jeremy's opening line was prompted by Becca's detailed profile. She greeted him&nbsp;with the following response:











"Hey there! I do like watching the Patriots, but I didn't catch any games today. I've been busy with studying for finals which are coming up this week. What do you do for work?"











A common interest in The Goonies brought us together and broke the ice. Four years later, a shared interest in the 1985 film has blossomed the relationship into an engagement.











I guess we have to credit our older siblings for introducing us to Mikey, Mouth, Data & Chunk when we were young. Watching the movie over and over has led to our marriage. Thanks Matt, Peter & Pam!

She Said Yes!

On December 24th of last year, we got&nbsp;engaged in downtown Ithaca in front of the city's community tree. Here is the play-by-play description of the proposal from Jeremy's perspective:

It was a night I will never forget. Not just because it was Christmas Eve and such a magical time of year, but because it was the night Becca answered the most important question I'll ever ask with a resounding "yes!"&nbsp;

We attended an evening&nbsp;candlelight service at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in downtown Ithaca.&nbsp;My emotion while sitting in our&nbsp;balcony pew was a&nbsp;50/50 mix of joy and nerves.&nbsp;I tucked the box holding Becca's engagement ring into the breast pocket of my suit coat. As a wide, ear-to-ear smile stretched across my face, I could feel the box raise and lower with each beat of my heart. Looking back on it, the service was a blur. I remember sitting very close to Becca, trying to act as natural as possible and avoid giving away the secret. I wanted the night to be perfect.After the congregation sang Silent Night and we walked out into the evening, I asked her if she would take a short stroll downtown with me. It was about a five minute walk from the church steps to Ithaca's "Commons," a pedestrian road lined with shops and on this night, Christmas lights. We walked quickly, hand-in-hand to the large tree decorated for all to see in the heart of the downtown. As we neared the tree, I felt my heart drop into my ankles, weighted down by nerves. I knew the moment was getting close. To be honest, once the tree was an arms length away, my mind went blank. All I could think of to say was, "I love you." I must have said it a hundred times! It was as if those were the only words I knew how to say.&nbsp;After responding with "I love you too" a handful of times, I remember Becca looked at me with a facial expression that shouted, "get down on your knee already!" That's exactly what I did next. I fought through the nerves, found the words I was looking for and asked her to be my wife. She&nbsp;said yes, we kissed and here we are a year later. Becca insists she had no idea a proposal was in the works for Christmas Eve.&nbsp;After putting the ring on her finger, we walked about a mile down Cayuga Street and stood outside of the house where Becca's maternal grandmother, Marjorie Sheffer, once lived. The house is no longer in&nbsp;Becca's&nbsp;family, but it's the site where her grandfather, Howard, proposed. Becca is the second woman in her family tree who became engaged in Ithaca!Later that night, we celebrated our engagement with a glass&nbsp;of champagne served out of the trunk of my car. We parked at Ithaca College and took in a beautiful&nbsp;view overlooking Cayuga Lake and&nbsp;Ithaca. Aside from a brief run-in with the school's campus police, it was indeed a perfect night.

Through conversation, we learned a lot about each other, our interests and our family's histories. We discovered a collection of coincidental connections. Did you know?.....













Jeremy and Becca's birthdays are separated&nbsp; by one year and one day. Jeremy was born on March 30, 1990 and Becca was born on March 31, 1991. At the end of each March, we celebrate for 48 straight hours!









Jeremy and Jane, Becca's mother,&nbsp;are both natives of&nbsp;New York's Capital Region. Jeremy was born and raised in&nbsp;Averill&nbsp;Park, a small town east of Albany. Jane grew up in Burnt Hills, located not too far from Schenectady.









Jeremy and Becca both have family ties to New York's Adirondack Mountains. Jeremy's parents, Ellen and Kirk, have a home in Bolton Landing, located about half-way up Lake George. Becca's Uncle Bill and Aunt Dorothy own and operate The Canada Lake Store and Marine in the Southern Adirondacks.









Becca's maternal grandparents, Howard & Marjorie, are both graduates of Cornell University. So is her Uncle Roger. Jeremy's father Kirk and Uncle David&nbsp;are&nbsp;also a grads of Ithaca's Ivy League school. The Menards are passionate Big Red football, basketball and hockey fans!









Just like Jeremy's maternal grandparents, Roger & Jane, Jeremy and Becca became engaged on Christmas Eve.









Just like Becca's maternal grandparents, Howard & Marjorie, Jeremy and Becca got engaged in Ithaca. The sites of their engagements are&nbsp;separated by less than one mile!

We will be tying the knot at <a href="https://burlapandbeamsbarnwedding.com/">Burlap and Beams</a> in Thurman,&nbsp;New York on Saturday, June 23, 2018. Nestled within the Adirondack Mountains and located ten miles from&nbsp;Lake George Village, the venue and its barns boast a unique history.

"The grounds of Burlap and Beams contain a gracious farmhouse, a cluster of barns, a babbling brook and a breathtaking mountain. When viewing the property for the first time you can see why the original owners chose this spot to build their lives. The authenticity and charm of these structures has been painstakingly maintained and guarded since 1965.

The property at 242 Cameron Road boasts an interesting history, having served as the site of a tavern, hotel and store under various owners, and later was worked as a farm. The building at the corner of Cameron and Athol Roads seems to have begun with one Guy Brooks.

In 1820, Guy Brooks built what became known as Guy Brooks’ Tavern, described in Brown’s History of Warren County as the first known hotel in Thurman. It was a structure with a great stone chimney and fireplace.

In the 1980s, when it became apparent that water draining off Cameron Road was causing damage to the two southernmost barns, Bill Southwick worked to protect the barns and moved them to their present, drier location.

The main house had been built about 1885 by a man by the name of Hall. Burlap and Beams is located at the site of what is believed to be the earliest hotel in Thurman, NY. The house later became a fine family farm, home to Orley and Susie Needham and their children. Most recently, it was entrusted to the care of Terri Larson and her family, who lovingly maintain the history of the home while sharing the beauty of the barns"&nbsp;

Getting to Burlap & Beams

A North Country Trails coach bus&nbsp;will be transporting guests to Burlap &&nbsp;Beams for the wedding ceremony and reception on June 23rd.







The bus&nbsp;is set to pick up guests promptly at 3:15 PM&nbsp;from the Georgian Hotel & Resort located at 384 Canada Street in&nbsp;Lake George Village.&nbsp;For guests staying at Surfside on the Lake, the Georgian is located directly next door, a short walk&nbsp;to the hotel's main building.The same bus will be&nbsp;transporting guests from&nbsp;Burlap &&nbsp;Beams back to the hotel following the reception. The bus will be making an earlier trip (around 9:00 PM) and a later trip (around 10:00 PM).&nbsp; It is okay to leave your vehicle at Burlap and Beams overnight if you want to take the bus back after the reception.&nbsp;
