I was blind before I met you

During college, Jess worked the front desk at the Sheraton in downtown Iowa City, where she became friends with Kelsey Harman—Rayce’s sister. After Rayce graduated without a clear next step, Kelsey convinced him to move in with her and take a management job where she worked. Around that same time, Kelsey and Jess had been working together for a couple of years when a new security manager—someone Jess had heard rumors about—walked through the doors. The moment he saw Jess, he was dazzled. Jess, on the other hand, didn’t even glance his way. Her first thought? “He’s not my boss.” A few days later, he tried to make a friendly gesture, stepping in to “help” her in front of a guest. Jess (in her mind, politely—but those who know her know it was with a lot of sass) let him know she didn’t need help. Taken aback and with a laugh,&nbsp;the new guy backed off. That guy, of course, was Rayce. Rayce steered clear of her for a while after that. Eventually, Jess transferred to the front desk at Hotel Vetro, Sheraton’s sister property, where she worked solo. Rayce’s role involved making rounds to check in on staff, and when he stopped by Vetro, the two of them began to chat. Those conversations, at first casual and random, slowly grew into something more. They began to click.On Jess’s final night at the job, she found herself dealing with some aggressive guests during check-in. Rayce heard the call over the radio and sprinted to the scene with more urgency than he’d ever mustered. Seeing how Jess was being treated, he kicked the guests out on the spot—defending her like a true superhero. That moment brought them even closer. Soon after, Jess needed a temporary place to stay before moving back to Des Moines. Rayce, overhearing this, teamed up with Kelsey to offer her a spot to crash. Within days, Jess had claimed the couch as her workspace (still her go-to desk). One day, Rayce suggested they celebrate her next chapter. What began as talk of a coffee outing quickly escalated—first to drinks, and then to the fanciest restaurant in Iowa City. After all, Jess doesn’t do anything halfway. On their first official date, Rayce was both relieved and impressed: Jess wasn’t someone ordering a small salad—she dined like the queen she is. That night ended with a heartfelt conversation, the kind where both realized they had found someone who deeply understood them, and made them realize what it truly felt like to find the right, special person. And the rest? History. They moved together to downtown Des Moines, then spent four years in Nashville, and for the past seven years have called Chicago home.

About our family crest

As you journey through our wedding experience, you'll spot this family crest, designed by Rayce, making several appearances. We cherish the tradition of family crests as a symbol of the union between families. Inspired by this tradition, we've crafted our own contemporary crest to embody the merging of the Harman and Carbino families. Each element of the design holds special significance. Curled lines: Represents abstracted olive branches to represent the Carbino Italian heritage; the bonus is the curl represents the C in Carbino Axes: Represents the Harman Norway and Swedish (viking) side meaning strength and courage Shield: Represents Jessica's Welsh side and stands for stability and boldness Design at the top: Represents an abstracted fleur de lis for the Cajun French and Spanish of Rayce's mom's side of the family H letter in the center: As you would think, the H stands for Harman

Our Story

The Proposal Story

After&nbsp;countless hours of planning, Rayce proposed to Jess on April 20, 2024—the same month as their anniversary. The proposal process had technically begun weeks in advance, unbeknownst to Jess. Rayce's sister Kelsey orchestrated a girls' day during an upcoming family visit. To ensure Jess's attendance at the proposal location, Rayce crafted a fake event poster for Kelsey to present to her. Naturally, Jess, being skeptical, researched the supposed event online. With a bit more persuasion, she was thrown off the trail. On the day of the proposal, the entire Harman clan played their roles convincingly, making it seem like an ordinary day. Kelsey and Jess went to brunch, did some shopping, and finally headed to the "event." As they entered the venue, they were met by a photographer and videographer capturing the moment. Jess was initially confused but began to recognize familiar faces behind the camera—Bridget, one of their dear friends, and JT, another friend taking video. Kelsey gently motioned Jess to look further, and there she saw Rayce. Rayce stood next to a microphone, guitar in hand, and foot on a loop pedal, performing an original song he had written for her. The song's final line said, "Will you be my fiancée, fiancée, fiancée..." At that moment, Rayce gestured to the back of the room, where a line of family and best friends emerged from behind a black curtain. They had traveled from other states to be part of this momentous occasion. As Jess hugged everyone, they all, including Rayce, reminded her to turn around. She found Rayce on one knee with the ring. And, of course, her answer was... "Of course, yes!" Want to listen to the song? Funny Facts About the Proposal

- Jess was skeptical when Kelsey insisted on getting to the "event" precisely ON TIME. - Luckily, Rayce had closed the curtain at the venue because Jess tried to peek in before entering. - The curtain almost wasn't closed, but Jess's Aunt Shelly saved the day by providing a clip from her purse that said "Make it happen." This phrase was ironic on multiple levels—considering the importance of the day and the fact that this moment had been 10 years in the making. - Rayce created a digital flyer for all his accomplices with the weekend's details and directions—knowing Jess would have made one if she had known about it. He thought of everything. - Jess's sister, Angela, baked a beautiful engagement cake that everyone enjoyed at the after-party.

There will be free parking at The Crawford (wedding venue) and overflow options nearby. Those who park in The Crawford's parking lot can remain overnight as long as you pick your car up by 9:30am the next morning, Monday, September 15.

Things to Do

We have been to all of these below sites and loved them all. - <a href="https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/sites/chicagoriverwalk/home.html.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Chicago Riverwalk</a>: It's a beautiful walk right by the water with places to stop for a drink, coffee, or food along the way. You can take it all the way east to the lake and connect to the lakefront trail. Jessica and Rayce live a block away from the west end of the riverwalk. - Lakefront Trail: You can walk for miles north and south on the lakefront trail seeing both city and the boats on the water. - <a href="https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/dca/supp_info/millennium_park.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Millennium Park &amp; The Bean</a>: Walk around the park seeing the monuments, art installations, The Bean, and walk the bridge over to Maggie Daley Park. - <a href="https://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/parks-facilities/clarence-f-buckingham-memorial-fountain" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Buckingham Fountain</a>: Within Grant Park, it's one of the largest fountains in the world. You can walk through the park and also see the lake as the fountain is right near the lake. At night, there are light and water shows every 15 mins. - <a href="https://navypier.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Navy Pier</a>: Walk along the pier for a view of the lake and the skyline behind you. It also includes various entertainment, dining, shopping, and cultural attractions. Highlights include the iconic Centennial Wheel, the Chicago Children's Museum, theaters, and seasonal events. - Architecture Boat Tour: Take a scenic cruise along the Chicago River, learning about the city’s rich architectural history. The tour highlights iconic buildings and landmarks, offering insights into the styles and stories behind Chicago’s skyline. It’s both relaxing and educational - this is the top attraction locals enjoy as well. This is also where you can get a cup of coffee at the <a href="https://www.starbucksreserve.com/locations/chicago-roastery" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Starbucks Reserve Roastery</a>, the largest Starbucks in the world. - <a href="https://theskydeck.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">The Ledge at Skydeck</a>: Located on the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower), you can see a breathtaking view of Chicago from 1,353 feet above ground. It's the highest observation deck in the United States - you can see across four states on clear days. A standout feature is The Ledge - glass boxes that extend 4.3 feet from the building, so you can step out and look straight down at the city below. It also includes an immersive museum showcasing Chicago's rich history and architecture. - <a href="https://360chicago.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">360 Chicago</a>: ​It's an observation deck located on the 94th floor of the John Hancock Center. At 1,030 feet above street level, it offers panoramic views of Chicago's skyline, Lake Michigan, and, on clear days, parts of four states. The observation deck also includes CloudBar, a cocktail lounge offering local craft beverages and light snacks. And, there are also interactive exhibits about Chicago's history and neighborhoods. - <a href="https://360chicago.com/tilt" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">TILT</a>: It's an enclosed moving platform that tilts visitors outward from John Hancock Center building to a 30-degree angle, providing a unique downward-facing view of the city. SOME OF THE TOP MUSEUMS- <a href="https://www.artic.edu/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Art Institute of Chicago</a>: Founded in 1879, it's one of the oldest and largest art museums in the United States. It's across the street from Millennium Park. It houses a collection of over 300,000 works spanning 5,000 years of human talent. It's renowned for its extensive collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, including masterpieces like Georges Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, Grant Wood's American Gothic, and Edward Hopper's Nighthawks. Museum Campus:- <a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Field Natural History Museum</a>: It houses over 24 million specimens and artifacts, offering exhibits like "Inside Ancient Egypt," featuring mummies and a reconstructed tomb, and "The Ancient Americas," which showcases 13,000 years of human history. Notable displays include SUE, the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossil discovered, and Máximo the Titanosaur, the largest dinosaur ever exhibited. - <a href="https://www.sheddaquarium.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Shedd Aquarium</a>: It's one of the world’s largest and most renowned indoor aquariums housing over 32,000 animals representing around 1,500 species, including fish, marine mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Exhibits include "Amazon Rising," "Wild Reef," and the "Abbott Oceanarium," which features beluga whales and Pacific white-sided dolphins. - <a href="https://www.adlerplanetarium.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Adler Planetarium</a>: The museum features three state-of-the-art domed theaters, including the Grainger Sky Theater, offering immersive sky shows. Exhibits include "Mission Moon" and "The Universe: A Walk Through Space and Time". It also houses the Doane Observatory, Chicago's only public research-active observatory, enabling visitors to observe celestial objects through a large aperture telescope.

- <a href="https://www.lechocolatdubouchard.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Le Chocolat du Bouchard</a>: This is a perfect place if you want a sweet treat, whether it's a sweet dessert or dessert beverage (cocktail or hot chocolate). You can pick something out from their large display at their counter or order off their menu. We enjoyed this spot. - <a href="https://buona.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Buona</a>: If you're looking for a quick bite to eat and you're interested in a local Chicago related classic, grab an Italian beef sandwich from this place. It houses a 72-bell musical instrument, making it one of only four Grand Carillons in the world. You can climb 253 steps to the observation deck and see views of Naperville, and on clear days, the Chicago skyline. Guided tours are $3 per person for ages 5 and older; children 4 and under are free.
