Peanut Butter Crackers

I had just transferred from Lycoming college in 2018 to start my Sophmore year at West Chester University. Focusing on my studies and Rugby, I wasn't really looking for anything. My days consisted of class, studying, rugby, friends, and work. In early September I began my first day of Organic Chemistry. Starting at a new school and in a class I knew was difficult it was safe to say I was nervous but also excited for what was to come. That morning I knew I needed to start off strong, so I had an early morning lift right before my first class of the day, Organic Chemistry. I walked in to a room full of strangers and sat down in the second row in the far left with no one else to my left. To my surprise, not one, not two, but three girls surrounded me on either side, one of them being Jess! Class begins and there is literally another language being written on the board by a professor who couldn't go one moment without talking about himself. Losing interest, I start to chat to the cute girl to my right. She has this crazy looking raggity bag loaded with these national park patches. Now, learn from my mistakes... do not judge a book by it's cover. I assumed they were bought online since it would be crazy to think this small girl traveled across the US to get these. As I said, I assumed she kinda just put them on there, so I ask, "hey..." and she kind of gives me this side eye and a hoarse "hey" back. I said, "what website did you get those patches from, it's a pretty sick bag". Not a millisecond later I get the dirtiest look I've gotten from a girl, "I'm not too sure since I got them all when I went there". I. Was. Devastated. First class, first conversation, first strikeout. I of course apologized and explained myself; however, the conversation was cut short due to the lack of attention I/we were giving to Dr. Pruitt. Class goes on. This was an hour 20 class, and about 40 in my stomach starts to growl. This tends to happen when you lift but don't eat, and I suddenly smell peanut butter. I hear crinkling to my right, and to my surprise I see this girl eating some Ritz Peanut Butter Crackers. Now, if you've never had these, when you open a pack the entire room smells like peanut butter. Hungry, nervous, shy, but most of all hungry, I look to my right and ask, "hey... do you mind if I get a cracker IM STARVING" *queue the stomach growling*. Again, I get a kinda "why the heck is this dude talking to me again" look. About 5 seconds pass and she says, "sure???" and reluctantly hands me a peanut butter cracker. It was a lifesaver. I thank her and she sort of chuckles at me because I devoured the thing. When I heard that chuckle I knew this was my chance. Not moments later, the professor tells us to take our phones out and use this "Poll Everywhere" app to answer questions.... questions that allowed group work ;) I immediately ask her to work with me because frankly, I had no idea how nomenclature worked and to me it looked like the guy drew a bunch of connected lines on the board. I asked her what her name was, and of course, it was Jess. We worked together and I also started chatting with the other girls and people in the class. I said goodbye to Jess and we went on our way. Now, here's where things get interesting. The very next class we have, again, I lifted that morning and was hungry. To my surprise, Jess sat right next to me again and the other people as well. Same seats, same people. BUT, this time I didn't need to ask for a cracker... she brought me a WHOLE pack. I was very excited and thanked her. We worked together again, but I also worked with the other two girls that sat in front and behind me. The very next class I was absolutely flabbergasted when I came in to not one, but TWO packs of crackers. This time from the girls that sat in front of and behind me, and of course, I happily accepted. Due to this, the pack that Jess brought me I sadly did not receive (I mean rightfully so). I was a happy camper, but I could tell Jess was kinda like "okay well whatever then screw this guy". Class goes on and as a little pretext, Jess at the time was commuting to West Chester from home. This was her last class of the day, and naturally, she was trying to get the heck out of dodge and as fast as she could. I'm talking this girl could've qualified for the fast-walking Olympics team. I would literally try to chase after her. After class that day, since I knew she was kinda thrown off by my acceptance of other women's peanut butter crackers, I knew I had to try to get her number. As I actually ran to catch up to her, I started to shout her name and caught her right out front of the Schmucker science buildings by these food trucks. With Schwarma truck music in the background, and funnily enough me being out of breathe, I caught up to her. Again, surprised by my obvious advances, she asked me what I needed. Being the literal embodiment of anxiety at this point, I reluctantly asked her for her Snapchat instead of her number. She said, "Um sure but why do you need my snapchat?" to which I answered, "Oh you know... so we can study". She said, "you want my snapchat... so we can... study?" and I said, "well yeah I can send pics of my problems and such, you know" to which she laughed because she's not an idiot. To my surprise, she gave me her snapchat! From then on I only took her peanut butter crackers :) The story does go on though. We were simply in the talking stage throughout that Fall semester, but boy oh boy did we have fun. From mixers and going out to studying in the basement of Saxbys (aka the Rat) our friendship started to grow into something more. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't the only one who had their eye on Jess, but luckily I was able to blow the competition out of the water. Decemeber rolls around and at this point Jess and I had been talking and hanging out since September, and at this point I had caught some serious feelings for this girl. It had been a while since I had a girlfriend, so of course I was nervous even though we had become the best of friends. I ask her to come to Philly with me and my family. There we went to look at the lights, the Macy's Scrouge display, and LOVE park. This is where I was going to make my move. I asked Jess to take a picture with me under the LOVE sign in LOVE park, and a little reluctantly, she said sure. It was there that about 3 pictures in I leaned over and gave her a kiss. I asked her to be my girlfriend, and well, I think you know the rest. Fast forward to today, Jess and I have been together for 6+ years and engaged for coming up on two. She makes me the happiest and best version of myself, and I owe a lot of my success and where I've gotten to today to her. She is my rock and I'm happy we can share these sorts of memories with you all. If you've made it this far, thanks for reading and taking interest in our love story. See you April 19th, 2025!!
