Now, I know what you're thinking. Why is he talking about sports when this is supposed to be a story about how we met? Don't worry, it is. Our story starts out like any romantic adventure... on the internet. I had been in and out of several very brief and underwhelming dating attempts and was really losing hope about meeting someone. And of course, thats when it happened. There she was. The woman I've been looking for. And she's in a Yankees hat. Ugh. The moment I saw her profile picture, Yankee hat and all, I knew I had to meet her. I kept scrolling through her pictures, her blue/green eyes were so beautiful against the black top she had on. I was mesmerized. So I quickly "slid into her DMs" as the kids say. For those of you who don't know what that means, it means that I sent her a private message. Soon, we began talking away. We discussed our love of classic rock, travel and so much more. We soon decided to meet up in person. I was so excited, except, there was a problem. I was also seeing someone else at the time (such is the life with online dating), and I don't enjoy dating multiple people at the same time, so I called off our date much to my chagrin. The decision fell upon mixed reviews to her friends. Some thought it was ill timed and that she dodged a bullet. Others saw the situation and commended me on being an upstanding young(ish) man and saw my desire for a relationship a good thing. Jill was in the latter camp. She later told me she entrusted to her friends "I think a good one just got away..." As it turns out, I didn't get very far. Soon after I was back on the market and wouldn't you guess the first person I matched with? Ol' Yankees fan herself, Jill. I slid immediately back into her DMs and we set up a date for as soon as humanly possible. We hit it off instantly and the rest is history.

Santa Barbara Municipal Airport (SBA) is a lovely airport and the closest option.United and American fly into Santa Barbara Airport. Most flights into SBA will&nbsp;have a connection but we definitely recommend flying directly into Santa Barbara if you'd like to avoid traffic in LA.

The closest major airport is LAX.For those of you who want to take the scenic route, there&nbsp;are plenty of nonstop flights into LAX.&nbsp;Without traffic, LAX to Santa Barbara is a scenic hour and a half drive.There are plenty of rental car options and Santa Barbara Airbus runs a direct shuttle from LAX to downtown Santa Barbara and Goleta roughly every 2 hours for those not wanting to brave LA traffic.

TRAVEL NOTE Santa Barbara is an incredible beach town and given that, hotels tend to be expensive and book up early. If you are interested in being "in-the-action" or very close to the venue, the hotels around State Street, Stearns Wharf or East Beach are where you want to stay. If you are looking for something a little quieter and/or cheaper there are a number of great options in the Carpinteria and Goleta areas only about a 15-20 minute drive to the venue.

Food is served family style intended for sharing. The Lark’s full bar features classic as well as craft cocktails using the finest in artisan spirits, mixers and seasonal fruits and vegetables. One of the most recommended restaurants in SB! Convivo is a Santa Barbara restaurant with an Italian soul. Chef-Owner Peter McNee’s food is best described as ‘Nomad Italian’. It strays from the standard or traditional Italian, sourcing inspiration from many other cultures’ cooking but its soul and cooking methods are thoroughly Italian. The ever-changing menu includes small plates (“Cicchetti”), housemade pasta, wood-fired pizza and fresh seafood and steaks cooked over a wood grill and served family-style.

Another SB must - The Black Sheep is a family affair that marries Chef Robert Perez’s delectable global-inspired cuisine with his son Ruben’s genuine hospitality. Expect an eclectic menu that draws from Latin American, European, and Asian flavors with locally sourced ingredients, and a welcoming, unpretentious atmosphere in a cozy downtown space just off State Street.

Come for the oceanfront view, and stay for the excellent food! Boathouse is a great breakfast &amp; lunch spot (they are also open for dinner). This is a great family friendly (and our favorite brunch) option whose menu runs the gamut from eggs benedict and fish tacos to burgers and classic wedge salads.

Oh you fancy, huh? If you’re seeking an intimate, fine dining experience and access to some of the region’s best wines, look no further than bouchon santa barbara. Established in 1998, bouchon helped to put Santa Barbara’s wine country cuisine on the map with its French-accented, seasonal California fare.

If you’re looking to dine somewhere that feels effortlessly hip and contemporary with a kick of spice, get yourself to Sama Sama Kitchen. The lunch and dinner restaurant features Southeast Asian fusion-style cuisine prepared with ingredients sourced from local farms. It’s truly unlike anything else in town and the bright, innovative flavors will not disappoint.

Can’t find something to eat the whole family agrees on?  Enter, SB Public Market!  Santa Barbara’s original food hall is a great spot to sample from some of the best local cuisine. Empty Bowl Gourmet Noodle Bar serves warming Thai-inspired dishes and Ca’Dario Pizzeria Veloce specializes in Italian-style pizzas. Corazon Cocina satisfies Mexican cravings with their Guadalajara-style street food while Fala Bar caters to vegans. Wabi Sabi hits the sushi spot and The Garden dishes out elevated sandwiches and salads. For something sweet to finish, hit Rori’s Artisanal Creamery for a gourmet ice cream.

Shopping

Loaded with shops and showrooms, restaurants, bars, and coffee shops, State Street is definitely the main artery in town, and using it as a yellow-brick-road of sorts is a sound strategy. On State Street itself, you’ll find plenty of surf shops, as well as the best of the stores and brands you already know and love. Additionally, you’ll find the entrance to Paseo Nuevo Mall. Continue to follow State Street and you’ll also find small, locally owned boutiques inside La Arcada. This hidden gem is an architectural delight, home to the iconic turtle fountain. Shops are scattered throughout all of Santa Barbara, including Arlington Plaza and De La Guerra Plaza. And everywhere you look, there are consignment shops and souvenir shops, gift shops and galleries just waiting to be discovered. As you near the water, head east off of State Street between Montecito and Mason Streets to find yourself in the Funk Zone. This up-and-coming area is bursting with energy, and, while it is definitely known for its abundance of wine tasting rooms, it has loads of eclectic shops to entertain as well. If you hit the water and just want to keep going, Stearns Wharf and the Santa Barbara Harbor are also home to several cute souvenir shops, perfect for picking up a memento for yourself, or an I-Was-Thinking-of-You gift for someone else.

Paseo Nuevo is an outdoor shopping destination in the heart of downtown! Shop locally owned small businesses & boutiques, plus staple stores like Sephora, Victoria’s Secret, PINK, Aveda and over 70 more shops & restaurants. The beautiful paseos, courts, public art and terrace lend a perfect setting for a busy day of shopping.

Located just two miles from State Street, this 30-acre park is home to more than 146 species, including mammals, reptiles, birds and insects, exhibited in open, naturalistic habitats overlooking the Pacific Ocean and San Ynez Mountains. Some of the Zoo’s most famous residents include penguins, giraffes, anteaters, gorillas, and a flock of native California condors. The Zoo can be toured in about two hours, but you’ll likely be tempted to linger longer.
