Our story began when we both attended Pitt, joined the same church on campus, and entered into leadership with their college ministry (Cornerstone). We briefly got to know each other at leadership retreats, at Cornerstone on Wednesday nights, and every Friday when we handed out free tea with other students. These shy beginnings were cut short by Joel’s cancer diagnosis in February, and the global pandemic that followed. Just before spring break, Joel asked if we could meet for lunch when we returned (and his treatments neared an end), but of course, we didn’t return due to the semester finishing virtually.
When we returned to campus in the fall, we picked up where we left off. Between early morning runs before class and late evenings chatting long after a Cornerstone event had ended, our friendship rapidly grew. Though Charis didn’t like to be distracted from her studies, determined pre-med student that she was, she was easily persuaded to join Joel for an afternoon hike or a late night walk.
Despite Joel’s resolve to not pursue a relationship until Charis was “at least halfway through medical school” so as not to distract her (we are quite grateful to the friend who talked Joel out of that one), we eventually figured out that we were on the same page.
We are thankful for every season that we have since shared – the easy and challenging ones alike. After countless hikes, (less) runs, studying together in Hillman Library, memorable dates to Phipps Conservatory and the Pittsburgh Zoo, Bible studies, ridiculous halloween costumes, leaps into frozen ponds, too many board games, career pivots, doctor’s appointments, a pet snail, lots of prayer, and a ring, we are excited to tackle the rest of life together.
