John & Thuy

Our Story

How we met

HIS Perspective: I met Thuy through a mutual friend (Duong) who suggested that I should help her with becoming a better leader and broaden her career options. Time passed by and we stayed in touch via ping pong, tennis, and badminton. ~1yr later I took her on a 12hr+ long “first” date and brought her to my childhood schools and neighborhood. We had great conversations about our childhoods and upbringing and views on several topics of life. I guess you could call this a long 12hr+ speed date. This date sealed the deal for becoming boyfriend and girlfriend. The rest is history! *Thuy might disagree to everything that I wrote but it is the truth!!

HER Perspective: I was introduced to John because I wanted to improve myself in all aspects of my life. He seemed to genuinely want to help me and has similar interests in sports and international culture. Through our similarities, I was confident that we would become great friends! I thought he was joking when he suddenly asked me out on a date, so I casually accepted but who knew that he planned to spend the WHOLE DAY with me. And now two years later we're planning our wedding.

The Proposal

HIS Perspective: Thuy's positivity, passion, and ambition to always strive for more and to better herself was what attracted me most. After dating for 2 years and seeing how she never lost this aspect of herself, I knew she was the one. I bought the ring 5 months prior to proposing. We were planning to visit Taiwan and Hong Kong in November and I decided to propose at one of the most beautiful beaches in Taiwan. Weeks prior to the big moment, I had to hide the ring on me and not be discovered (it was at my parents before this). It was one of the most intense periods of my life, trying to not be discovered but Thuy never found out and she said YES! I AM THE MAN!!!!

HER Perspective: John had planned an elaborate trip to Taiwan & Hong Kong for one of our vacations. I thought it was just another amazing experience that we were going to share but who knew he had other ideas in his mind. At the beginning of our trip, we landed in Taipei, Taiwan. John had intended to propose at Kenting Beach which is in the Southern most region of the country, hours away from Taipei. To get to this place we had to go on a 2.5 hour High Speed train and another 2 hour bus ride. Our host in Taipei tried to convince us to stay in the northern region to sight see rather than spend half a day travelling. I was deliberating the thought but John was frantic that his plans would be RUINED. We ended up sticking to the original plan and when we arrived at the beach it was a gorgeous sunny day. We walked about .75 mile along the beach to a secluded rocky area and stood on the rocks. I casually mentioned how nice it would be to have wedding photos taken along this beach and John seized the moment to take out the ring then said, "We could start now, Will You Marry Me?"
