Our Wedding

With a simple swipe, our story began! After connecting on Hinge, our journey led to an unforgettable first date at Simmzy’s Restaurant in Manhattan Beach on July 28th, 2022. John had just moved to Los Angeles two months prior, and Elise cautiously agreed to give someone from outside the "South Bay bubble" a chance. What started as a casual drink evolved into five hours of laughter and connection. Little did Elise know, John's parking meter was set for only three hours. But he was too nervous to leave for a second to add more time if it possibly meant losing the girl. However, John was lucky to not find a ticket, and luck became a theme throughout our improbable journey of finding one another. After a year of "long distance" dating from Marina del Rey to Redondo Beach, we embarked on a new adventure, moving in together in the sun-kissed shores of Manhattan Beach, deepening our bond and growing as partners under the same roof. And nearly one year after that, on May 2nd, 2024 on those very same shores, John asked Elise to join him in a lifetime of love and companionship, in the eyes of our families and friends.

The people closest to us have been an important element in our story from the beginning. Elise threw John in the proverbial deep end by meeting all of her volleyball friends at a summer tournament two days after that first date, which showed him the character of friends she chose to keep around her. John was brought into large family gatherings early on, still an eye-opening experience for an only child of two only children. And John couldn't wait to introduce her to his visiting parents that first holiday season and later to bring her to the east coast for a Bachelor-style "hometown date." All of this has led to our excitement to get married with you all in attendance on the beautiful Costa Brava coastline of Spain. You all hold a piece of our story in one way or another, and we can't wait to share this special day with those of you who helped bring us together.

Please don't be late - the buses won't wait for long! Bus transfers will also return you to those three locations (Blanes city center, Hotel Santa Marta, and near Hotel Roger de Flor in Lloret) starting at 1:20am after the party (following the venue shuttling back down the hill). If you need to leave the event sooner, a designated member of the El Convent staff will be standing at the venue entrance to call taxis.

El Convent de Blanes, located less than 50 miles outside of Barcelona, was built in 1583 and preserved as a heritage site on account of its scenic value, overlooking the Balearic Sea apart of the Mediterranean. You'll find beautiful views in three directions - back down to the beach town of Blanes, up the ragged coastline, and out to the sea's horizon dotted with boats enjoying the blue and green waters. On the grounds of more than 5,000 square meters, you'll enjoy a beautifully arranged garden amidst iconic pine trees extending out over the cliff. The ceremony space has steps diving down toward the horizon as you enter, a picturesque backdrop to the most important moment. The cocktail hour moves along the cliffline to a partially wooden-floored terrace, with access to a secluded photo op view of the Costa Brava coast. The dinner is held inside the convent's stone foundation and many windows. And the open-air dance floor sits atop the afternoon views of garden and sea. Jubany Gastronomy Catering

We are thrilled to have Michelin-rated chef Nandu Jubany cater our cocktail hour and dinner. Guests will be treated to traditional Catalan cuisine presented in a variety of truly unique and gorgeous displays. The personal service from their staff, visual appeal of the dishes, and amazing tastes are all top notch, and we can't wait for you to experience it all throughout the night, as well as the Spanish wines and spirits at the bar.

Transportation Recommendations

Look into flights as soon as you're able to! We expect prices to only rise as we get closer. We recommend all guests fly into Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN). Located approximately 30 minutes from Barcelona's city center, it's a major airport with assorted international options, as well as easy access to rides from the airport around town or to the various train stations with service to Blanes. Please note: while we know it isn't possible for everyone, we are highly recommending you arrive as early in the week ahead of the wedding as you can! We're hoping you can use our events as an excuse for a European vacation. Jet lag is notable upon arrival, and we want you all to be fresh for our events and to fully enjoy your trip! Our scheduled bus shuttles to take our guests from Barcelona to Blanes/Lloret will pick you up at noon (local time) on Thursday, March 27th at Avinguda Diagonal, 355 in Barcelona (near the corner of Avinguda Diagonal and Carrer del Bruc). The 2 buses will have 3 total drop off stops between them: one will go to Plaça de Catalunya in Blanes (very central to the town) and Hotel Santa Marta, and the other will go to Hotel Santa Marta and near Hotel Roger de Flor in Lloret (on Avinguda de la Vila de Tossa, a short walk away). If you aren't staying at Santa Marta, please choose the shuttle that will get you closest to your accommodations (either the Blanes or Lloret town centers). You will arrive in plenty of time to check in and prepare for our welcome event that evening. The same transportation will pick you up at noon on Sautrday, March 29th from those stops (Hotel Santa Marta, Plaça de Catalunya in Blanes, and on the main street near Roger de Flor in Lloret) and return you to the same location (Avinguda Diagonal, 355) in Barcelona. Taxis are usually not difficult to find driving around or parked outside hotels or major attractions. Taxis also seem to be reliably quick and take credit card (tarjeta) or euros in cash (efectivo). Barcelona has objected to the use of Uber, so we recommend downloading the "Cabify" app and uploading your card information there prior to your trip in case you're in a cab-less area. Cabify works very similarly to Uber or Lyft, although the wait times can be long. However, there isn't Cabify service in Blanes or Lloret, so utilize the app only to get around in Barcelona. It may be possible to take a taxi from Barcelona directly to your hotel on the Costa Brava, but we'd recommend taking the train for a fraction of the cost. For those not taking/ able to take our designated transports on Thursday/Saturday:When you are ready to venture up the coast to the area of our wedding, take the R1 train route ending at Maçanet-Massanes (it can also end at the Blanes station) to the Blanes stop from any of the following train stations that are more centrally located throughout Barcelona: Sants, Plaça de Catalunya, Arc de Triomf, El Clot, or Sant Adriá de Besós. Train tickets only cost a few euros. For a little over an hour, you'll enjoy a beautiful ride directly along the coastline northeast to Blanes. Please note: whether you're staying in Blanes or Lloret, the Blanes train station is your closest stop. From the Blanes train station, there are multiple ways to arrive at your hotel. Hotel Santa Marta, for one, will send a car to pick you up if you give them a call, and other hotels in the area have transfer services that should be able to help if you reach out, as well. Taxis will also be able to take you where you're staying, if they're present at Estación de tren Blanes. If none are present, train station workers can get you in contact with a ride service. Similar train information to that above can be used to return to Barcelona following the wedding, if needed. Return to Estación de tren Blanes and head south to Barcelona on the route ending at Molins de Rei or l'Hospitalet de Llobregat, both of them stop at each of the listed stations throughout the city. The Barcelona-El Prat airport has two metro stations that have connections to these railways once you're back in Barcelona: Aeroport T1 &amp; Aeroport T2. For those renting a car and driving for any portion of your stay in Spain, you need to apply for an International Driver's Permit (IDP) from AAA. Fill out the application and turn it into a local AAA branch prior to your trip. The application can be found here: https://www.aaa.com/vacation/idpf.html. When flying home out of Barcelona-El Prat, make sure to arrive earlier than what you think is early. Check-in lines can be very long, even if you've checked in ahead of time and only need to go to bag drop. Flights also tend to board at different times (not just later, but also sooner with no warning) than what is designated on your ticket. And don't forget - Sunday, March 30th is daylight saving time in Spain, so clocks move forward an hour (the same as they did here in the US on March 9th). Plan your trip to the airport accordingly!

Cities of Blanes and Lloret

Blanes, known as the Gateway to the Costa Brava, and Lloret are each relaxing and picturesque beach towns along the coast of the Mediterranean. Blanes has a bustling beachside market, and both beachfronts are lined with palm trees and vibrant flowers, ideal for leisurely strolls to soak in the coastal atmosphere. S'Abanell Beach of Blanes is split into two bays by the Sa Palomera, a rock formation that juts into the water from the town center. The rocks are a sign of things to come, as "Costa Brava" means "Wild Coast" and is signified by the jagged cliffsides that begin to come into focus at our venue. Situated approximately 45 miles northeast of Barcelona, Blanes is easily accessible by both car and train in well under two hours, and Lloret is the very next town up the coast just a few miles further. Their proximity to the Catalonian capital makes them ideal vacation spots for day trips or extended stays.

We plan to arrange transportation for our guests leaving Barcelona in the late morning or afternoon of Thursday, March 27th, ensuring ample time to check into accommodations and join our welcome event that evening. And transports from various hotels to our wedding on Friday will be provided, with exact pickup stops to be given at a later date. There are many great hotels in Barcelona in case you're extending your stay on the front or back end of the wedding and want to enjoy Catalonia's capital. Hotels

If you have any free time while in Blanes or Lloret before, after, or between our events, we certainly recommend walking along the S'Abanell Beach (Blanes) or Platja de Lloret de Mar (Lloret) and exploring the town shops and beachside restaurants. More specifically, Blanes has a fruit and vegetable street market every Monday through Saturday from 8am to 2pm on Passeig de Dintre, centrally located in Blanes, and is most known for its fresh fish, specifically its prawns (gamba de Blanes). Please be aware, however, that since it will be "low season" at the end of March, some stores and restaurants may be closed.

If you plan on spending any time in Barcelona (which we highly recommend if you have time) before or after the wedding, below are a few suggested areas of interest and things to do!

La Sagrada Familia

The largest unfinished Catholic church in the world, La Sagrada Familia towers over most of Barcelona in the heart of its central downtown. Designed by famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi, construction is still ongoing after over 140 years (massive cranes around the church are an understood aspect of the view).La Sagrada Familia can be experienced from the outside, but if you want to see anything from the inside or get the access to climb the towers, you must buy tickets at the following link. We recommend doing so at least multiple weeks in advance! Park Güell

Another one of Gaudi's works, Park Güell is a privatized park filled with gardens and mosaic works throughout the walking space. The Gothic Quarter

The Gothic Quarter is an area of Barcelona with many shops, bars, restaurants, and beautifully crafted streetways, and is also regarded as one of the early homes and locational influences of 20th-century artist Pablo Picasso. This is also the area where we took our engagement photos seen throughout the website!Some of the main attractions include the Cathedral of Barcelona, the Museo Picasso, Paradiso (one of the highest rated bars in the world - also check out Sips not too far away from here, which is currently the #1 bar in the world), El Xampanyet (for a glass or bottle of classic Spanish champagne) and Tapeo del Born (for, surprisingly, maybe the best burgers we've ever had!).

Camp Nou - FC Barcelona's Stadium

FC Barcelona's historic and massive stadium, Camp Nou, is undergoing a significant renovation that waas originally expected to be completed by the time of the wedding but will now extend into the summer. FC Barcelona has been playing in Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys during the renovations. After its eventual reopening, Camp Nou will have the largest capacity of any football (soccer) stadium in Europe and the 5th-largest capacity of any sports stadium in the world! Things to Do

Please make sure to have all passport information updated prior to the wedding! This can take some time to get in order if yours is lost or out of date, so please look into this as soon as possible!

Blanes and Barcelona are both in the Central European Summer Time zone, which (as of the American daylight savings time change in March) is 5 hours ahead of our Eastern time zone and 8 hours ahead of Pacific time. 5 pm in Blanes is 12 noon in Washington DC and 9 am in Los Angeles. Please note: Spain's daylight saving time goes into effect on Sunday, March 30th. Clocks will move forward one hour at 2am that morning, the same as they did here in the US on March 9th. Keep that in mind for any travel plans that day!

Please be aware and careful of pickpocketers in Spain! This is a common notice to give visitors. From what we've heard, it's more a simple notice to just be aware of not leaving your phone and valuables sitting unattended/ uncovered outside on a coffee table or on the train at a stop, for example. We'd hate for anyone to travel to our wedding and have something happen, but as long as you just keep it in mind while you're in public, you should be fine.

It may be wise to exchange some dollars for euros along the way to Spain for random occasions where cash is needed, but overall, most restaurants, shops, and transportation services offer the ability to pay with credit card. Tipping in Spain is generally not expected for services, but 10% or so is a fine addition at restaurants.

We're expecting to have good weather, but it may be a little chilly, depending on your definition of the term! Average high temperatures for that time of year along the Costa Brava can range from the mid 50s - low 60s (F). Sunset will be shortly after 7pm in Blanes on March 28th, 2025, which will coincide with the end of our cocktail hour and lead us into the more indoor portion of the evening. And while it's not a particularly rainy time of year, we'll still be keeping our fingers crossed!

The city of Blanes, the location of our wedding venue and welcome party, is known as a weekend getaway location in the summer for beachgoers of Barcelona. It won't be as busy at the end of March as it is in the summer months, and be prepared for some shops to be closed, but you'll still get a taste of the Costa Brava vacation lifestyle.

Traveling through the area is certainly doable without fluency in Spanish, but even those with a Spanish background may find themselves a little lost due to the prevalence of the Catalan language from Barcelona to Blanes and beyond. English and Spanish speakers are abundant, however, and downloading a translator app can help with street signs and other notices. You'll find that while Spanish is more associated with Italian, Catalan is more similar to French. Some common Catalan phrases: "Bon dia" (good morning), "Adéu" (goodbye), and "Vale" pronounced ba-leh (yes/ ok/ sounds good - you'll hear this one a lot!).

Puedo traer a mis niños?Les pedimos muy amablemente que la ceremonia y recepción sea de adultos solamente. Amamos a todos los niños pero te mereces disfrutar esta noche de fiesta. Como esta el clima en Marzo?Blanes esta en la costa y se puede poner un poco frio en la noche. Esperamos que el clima sea entre 20 y 25 grados durante el día y en la noche entre 10 y 15 grados.
