The Springfield Armory is the nation’s first armory and holds the world’s largest collection of

U.S. military small arms. Begun as a major arsenal under the authority of General George

Washington early in the Revolutionary War, the first national armory began manufacturing

muskets in 1794. Among its many notable weapons were the Springfield Model 1903 rifle and

the World War II era M1 Garand rifle. The Armory operated until 1968 and is now a museum.

Eastlake Design. The 1878 building was designed by renown church architect Richard Upjohn

many historical artifacts. Also, of related interest is the nearby Museum of Connecticut History
