I first met Angela near the start of medical school. She and her friend were trying to join my study group so there was a vote to see if Angela and her friend would be in. I was hesitant at first, but of course, ended up saying yes! I then got to know her a bit more through the Catholic Medical Association (CMA) on campus. Angela and I helped lead Bible studies and even a book study during Covid. I could tell she was very passionate about her faith the more and more we worked on CMA events together. Although we occasionally studied together, because I may or may not have started studying with a different smaller group, and worked together for CMA events we never really hung out outside of this during our first couple of years at medical school.
It was not until third year, when we started clinical rotations, that I got to truly know Angela more. We both became active in the Catholic Young Adult group in San Antonio and ended up playing on the same volleyball team a few times! A few months later I was certain I had feelings for her. I told her how I felt and asked if she would be interested in going on a date. She did not say anything for a moment... but then she said she felt the same way and would love to go on a date!
After only a few dates I knew she was the one. As we went through a few times apart due to away rotations and military training, we continued to grow together. We both were blessed to be matched in residency programs close to each other! Since moving out of Texas and starting residency she has continued to be supportive and persevere with any challenges she faces. There is no one I rather have by my side, so on 10/29/23, I asked her to marry me and she said YES!!
Joshua and I first met within the first few weeks of medical school through a study group (see Joshua's story for all of those details!). My first impression was that he was quiet but smart and so calm!
I didn't interact with him much outside of the study group during those first six months. Right before COVID hit, we were elected to the Catholic Medical Association (CMA) board on campus which helped me get to know him more through our organization's endeavors. As we led bible and book studies during COVID, I got more glimpses into his sense of humor, his leadership, and his love and reverence for God.
Fast forward to third year and suddenly we both found ourselves living in north San Antonio and joining the same young adult catholic community. I still remember that day in August when we both realized we lived 10 minutes from each other and made plans to check out St. Matthew's for the first time and get churros afterward. As we got more involved with the catholic young adult community we definitely started to get to know each other more and we quickly became great friends. We joined the same sand volleyball team and had such a great time with the community we had joined.
I think one of my favorite memories of Joshua in our platonic phase was our group trip to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City (yomuv crew!). As we have reflected on that trip in this season of our relationship, we truly believe Our Lady was interceding for God to bring us together and praying for our relationship. Within the two months after that trip, I started to see Joshua in a new light and I really started discerning my feelings for him. When he asked me out on a date the day after Easter in 2022, I was so surprised and excited that I couldn't say anything for a few seconds! But obviously, I said yes :)
From our first date, Joshua has been an incredible partner. It is a huge blessing that we can now journey through residency together in the same city and Joshua has been an ever-present source of peace and stability for me. I knew early in our relationship that he was everything I had prayed for in a spouse and I am so incredibly excited to join him in the sacrament of marriage on August 3. ❤️
