In February 2020, we matched on a dating app and connected over our recent trips to Cartagena, Colombia. We met up for what we both thought would be a brief mid-afternoon drink at a local bar. The date stretched into a late night bar-hopping expedition throughout DC...on a school night no less! Just a week later, the world shut down. Dating in a pandemic provided unique challenges, but it also offered an opportunity to get to know each other on a deeper and more authentic level. In the midst of the shutdown, Amanda quickly became a regular at zoom trivia nights and roommate barbecues at Josh’s house in Shaw. Our first real trip together was a whirlwind two-week roadtrip to New York, Cape Cod, and Portsmouth to meet each other’s families and friends.&nbsp; In the three years that followed, we've navigated job changes; become homeowners and pet parents; and traveled to some incredible places. It was on our trip to Japan that Josh decided to take things to the next level. He proposed at a picturesque ryokan nestled in the mountains south of Tokyo.

Travel

Near the Hotel

Located a short walk from the hotel blocks, Union Market is a hip neighborhood that includes two sprawling food halls and many great shopping options. Try Stellina for casual Italian, Cafe Unido for coffee, Marcellino for drinks, or A Litteri for old-school Italian subs.

Union Market

Also located in Union Market, St Anselm is an American tavern best known for its grilled fare, specifically steaks. This is one of Josh's favorite restaurants!

St. Anselm

A Levantine-inspired cafe that serves baked goods, wood-fired sandwiches, mezze, and speciality coffees. We highly recommend the shakshuka and pitas.

YELLOW Union Market

For a Longer Stay

Home to iconic monuments including the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument. We would be remiss not to recommend visiting one of the many Smithsonian museums that line the Mall. For the African American History or Air and Space, you will need to obtain free timed-entry passes in advance.

National Mall

A section of DC that has a high concentration of stunning embassies and diplomatic residences. Start at the corner of 20th and Massachusetts NW and walk northwest up Massachusetts Avenue. For the food motivated, begin your stroll with a bite at Emissary, an all-day local cafe.

An intimate restaurant located in Capitol Hill that serves tapas and family-style Spanish dishes.

Joselito Casa de Comidas

A fan-favorite for locals and tourists alike. Le Diplomate is a French bistro located on popular 14th street. We strongly recommend making reservations a few weeks in advance.
