Our Story

This is Ian.

&nbsp;		In August 2011 he walked into our freshman lock-in, unaware that he’d be meeting not only his greatest friends but the love of his life. While the rest of us were busy figuring out our lockers, this precocious older brother of four had already mastered calculus, comedy, and everything in between. The same kid pitching everybody business ideas at age fourteen would go on to live full-throttle—juggling prep hockey, CrossFit, half-marathons, and start-ups—all while relentlessly checking in on every friend in his orbit. He often would attempt to ask Josie about her schedule for the year... and subsequently adjust it to match hers, as long as it didn't interfere with his numerous AP classes. A serial schemer, allergic to leaving plans unfinished, he would proudly remind us at the start of each semester,&nbsp;“I’m going to marry Josie Sheehan.” We knew better than to doubt him.

This is Josie.

She first appeared in my life lugging a 500-page Harry Potter book into fourth-grade homeroom—a fitting preview of the brilliant mind she’d share with us over the years. By fourteen she was sailing a 420 at the national championships in San Francisco and leading a volleyball squad that would go on to finish state runner-up three times. But above all accolades, what made me proudest of Josie was her longstanding vision to one day help women. She’s always had a knack for charting her course well ahead of schedule. None of us ever missed her exaggerated laughs at Ian's hysterical one-liners during every lunch block, she always ensured they were at the same table. Highly instinctual, equal parts Curie and Goodall, she finds ways to connect with literally everyone and everything, from animals to humans. It’s that same natural intuition and ability to find the right doors that ultimately led her to Ian.

This is their story.

It began as two teenagers texting through thunderstorms and swapping the friendship bracelet that Josie wove for Ian, which clung to his wrist at all times. Come senior year, their relationship felt inevitable, as they laid out the ultimate blueprint for “high-school sweethearts.” After graduation, Ian played junior hockey on the East Coast, while Josie laid down roots at OSU. As post-grads, he docked in Chicago (and even Hong Kong) for M&amp;A 101, while she powered through in Columbus, clocking night shifts as an oncology RN and studying to be a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. Somehow, across multiple time zones, ferry schedules, and evolving definitions of togetherness… I watched the rare magic of two people picking up right where they left off, months dissolving into minutes. When the storm of their early twenties finally settled, they landed in Chicago. Not only did I have my two anchors back—but I also gained a new niece: their furry-faced Caucasian Shepherd, Lady Jane. After years of anticipation followed by distance, it’s easy to say, “They finally made it.” But the deeper truth is that they’ve always been here. The girl with the 500-page novel at hand and young “Mr. Right” have been giving us all something to admire and aspire to since the day they met.
