Kayaking on the Potomac is a great way to see the monuments from afar, while exercising and enjoying nature. There are a couple of kayaking rental companies, one of them is Key Bridge Boat House.
The crescent trail is highly recommended for biking. It starts from Georgetown and leads to the center of Bethesda, where you can grab a bite or drink and do some shopping. Plenty of nature and occasional views of the Potomac along the way. 40 mins ride each way. Bike rentals available at Big Wheel Bikes.
The Mall runs from the Lincoln memorial to the Capitol, with memorials along the way. The Mall is quite long, so it is recommended to just choose a few to visit. Popular ones are Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Martin Luther King.
Newly developed wharf area with restaurants, bars, and music venues. Close to downtown, nice to go for a walk for a few hours.

Historic town in Northern Virginia. Main street is King St, with charming restaurants, bars and shops. 30 minutes by car, accessible by metro. Ideal to go for lunch for a few hours. Largest caverns in Eastern America. 1.5 hours from Washington, DC. Recommended only if staying for more than three days. Easier to go by car, but can also get by public transportation or tours.
