The Mad River runs right through the Mad River Valley, from Warren to Moretown and beyond! Around Waitsfield, it's a great river for swimming, kayaking, and tubing. You can rent tubes and kayak from Clearwater Sports in Waitsfield - or sign up for a shuttle and they'll drive you to the river and pick you up at the end!
Waterbury Reservoir is just north of the town of Waterbury, VT (~20 minutes from Moretown or Waitsfield, VT). Head to Waterbury Center State Park where you can swim or rent kayaks from Umiak Outfitters (located right on the lake in the state park).
There are tons of hikes in and around the Mad River Valley! For an easier hike, take a walk along the Mad River Greenway (access it where the Mad River crosses Meadow Rd, just north of Waitsfield). For something more moderate, try the Wu Ledges trail, which gives you a nice vista over the Mad River, or the Chases Mountain trail, where you're sure to see some interesting flora and fauna. Finally, if you want a more challenging hike, get on the infamous Long Trail and hike up to Mount Abe. Or, check out the (melted) slopes at Mad River Glen and grab a beer at Stark's Pub. Wherever you go, make sure you bring sunscreen and bug spray!
Head to Lawson's Finest Liquids for a pint in the Mad River Valley, or Von Trapp Brewing for the Sound of Music vibes (and live music on Friday nights!). If you're up in Stowe, VT (~30 minutes from Moretown), check out the Alchemist Brewing and their famous Heady Topper. Looking for a bar? Check out Three Penny Taproom in Montpelier or Blackback Pub in Waterbury.
Don't miss getting a Vermont creemee (aka, soft serve)! Check out Canteen Creemee in Waitsfield, the window at Crossroads Beverage and Deli in Waterbury, or Dairy Creme in Montpelier. Or if you're a fan, head over to the Ben and Jerry's factory just north of Waterbury for some regular old scoops!
