Though Julia Gretz and Christopher Mikec grew up only 5 minutes away, they chose to never speak to each other until they were 20 years older and virtually over 2,000 miles apart.
Chris was the "new kid" freshman year at Peters Township High School. Julia remembers telling a friend, "That new kid is cute, I just don't know what I'd say to him!" And you know how this one ends (she didn't say anything to him until 6 years later).
Going to a school where you can pass 40,000 different people each day, it's hard to run into someone from home. And Julia and Chris didn't run into each other at all for the first two years at Penn State. It wasn't until the summer before their junior year when Julia reached out to a mutual friend and asked about Chris. Her friend encouraged her to reach out, though Julia thought it was silly considering he was in San Francisco for the summer and she was in Washington, D.C.
They made it through a summer of texting and finally were geographically aligned again. For their first date, they decided to go down the road to Peter's Lake to walk their dogs. After talking for hours, not wanting the date to end, Julia had to laugh, thinking back to her younger self saying, "I just don't know what I'd say to him!"
