Il Palio is a medieval horse race held twice a year in the main square of Siena. The horses represent the 17 contradas (districts) of Siena, but only 10 race during the Palio. This historical event is beloved by the people of the Siena and provides a glimpse into their rich culture and past. Prior to the race, the streets are filled with festivities, gatherings and preparations for the big race - the city holds a special buzz during this time and is definitely a Bucket List Experience for those who are not from Siena.
