Covid + Poker + Recovery + Bumble + Turophilia
Amongst other things...but thats how it happened.
We worked...and lived in sober living environments (SLEs). Trying our best at a new life and to harbor and cultivate an environment conducive to the abstinence from drugs and alcohol by replacing the substances with a set of principles a person can strive to live by daily.
A mutual friend of ours occasionally hosted a small poker game at his apartment. That’s where we first met. And that’s where I first heard Kate was dating. Coincidentally, we were both on Bumble. Luckily for me, I found her - 1st at the poker table and then on Bumble. Unbeknownst to me, Kate had a feature on her end allowing her to review her likes before matching. Just so happened that the SLE we were both working for had a rule against intercompany dating. Kate responded as only Kate does - sarcastically. Something to the tune of
“what the hell are you trying to do, you know we can’t date.” At that point, I had been successfully following rules for several years, so I was damned if I was going to break the rules...and my good streak. I asked permission from the powers that be. They amended the rule!
Our 1st date on June 1st 2020 (see what we did here?), I got take out Chinese - remember its Covid - and brought it to our friend’s apartment. He was kind enough not only to host poker, but also 1st dates. Little did I know one of Kates favorite things are potstickers. And that’s what I brought. Potstickers.
A couple of stories that happened in our first several dates: Kate and I playing chess for the first time and me thinking that I wouldn’t insult her intelligence by opening with the 4 move checkmate AND THEN KATE OPENING WITH THE 4 MOVE CHECKMATE. And the time we went to our favorite local Italian spot, Lococos, and Kate, unabashedly, straight-up telling me that we were getting 3 entrees….”You can do that?!?!”
One of us is good at poker and one of us is just lucky sometimes. But, we are definitely both really lucky to have found each other!
Oh yeah and we both really love cheese.
