Q + A

We researched the heck out of everything prior to our trip and we definitely took some longer routes along the way.. so please feel free to run your plans by us and ask any questions!

Are children invited?

We love your little one's but would like for this time to be adults only.

What is the currency?

US dollar and credit cards are widely accepted. There is no need to exchange for the local currency (Colones). If you pay in USD you may receive change in Colones. We brought cash but used credit cards our entire trip except to tip or pay local shops.

Do I need to get a rental car?

Likely yes, Tamarindo is a good distance from the major airports but if you find another form of transportation from either airport, possibly shuttle buses or taxis from LIR.. or hitching a ride with other guests. If you do not end up renting a car, Tamarindo is walkable but it is very common to rent golf carts or ATV's to go up and down the downtown area! Here are some options: paradisecartrentals.com | golfcartstamarindo.com | earthgeartamarindo.com

What's the deal with Rental Cars?

Do not use major search engines (expedia, etc.) to book a rental car in CR. Honestly, I'd stay away from major car rental companies for this trip from what I have read. We recommend using one of the local companies listed on the Travel section. These search engines show cars as low as $5/day but there are tons of bad reviews and experiences being charged thousands more than the original estimate.. Vamos and Adobe have great reviews and are professional larger CR based companies. We used Adobe during our trip and the amount charged was the exact amount quoted during booking. These companies are located close by the airport and provide transportation to and from the airport to the rental car facility. The shuttle will be waiting outside the airport for you upon on arrival of your flight. Remember! Enter your flight info and “KATELYN & PATRICK’S WEDDING” at reservation. A few facts to know: - CR requires two forms of insurance be held when renting a car. (1) is Liability Protection Insurance that is mandatory to hold in CR and is purchased through the rental car company, (2) is Loss Damage Waiver that you can either purchase with the rental car company during booking OR deselect the insurance IF you hold a credit card that covers this insurance. I know, Mastercard does. If you choose this option, the card holder must be the assigned driver and pay for the entire amount of the rental on the card. Also, a couple weeks prior to your trip call Mastercard and request proof of coverage and provide a printed copy to the car company when picking up vehicle.

What kind of car should I get?

4x4 vehicles are not necessary, even if traveling to the mountain/volcano/rain forest region. We do recommend if you are going to the mountainous central CR region or staying up Tamarindo hill to get a crossover or mid-sized SUV due to the bumpy and unpaved roads you will be driving on. If you are traveling straight from either airport to Tamarindo and the surrounding beaches there is a major paved highway (route 1) and all main roadways are paved so a sedan car would be just fine.

What's the best Map app?

HERE WeGo app. Soo.. crazy thing about CR is there is no physical addresses. You will find that addresses use descriptions and distances from another business. However, most businesses come up on a google search with the mapped location. We did not have wifi while we were out driving the country... so we used the HERE WeGo app that you can use offline. Prior to travel you can download the country map on the app, mark out your trip stops, and switch to offline mode where you can still search different stops and navigate between them and your saved marked locations.

What's the Wi-Fi password?

Unless you have international plans of some kind.. cell service will not work. The good thing is most hotels and restaurants have Wi-Fi access available. Also, enter "KATELYN & PATRICK'S WEDDING" in the comments section when booking a rental car with Vamos and the code includes free cellphone/hotspot/gps service. We traveled with no additional service or hotspot and using only GPS on the HERE WeGo app and Wi-Fi when available; however, you can rent a hotspot from rental car companies for like $5-$11/day.

Travel Restrictions

None - good to go! Since mid-2022, the US has dropped all restrictions on US citizens re-entering the country and Costa Rica no longer has travel requirements in place.
