In 2009, Katelyn and Cody met during their sophomore year of high school in Mr. Alexander's Algebra II class. They quickly became close friends and knew they had a unique bond. Cody was interested in dating Katelyn, but she was hesitant to risk their friendship. Since they were both on the high school swim team, they spent a lot of time together. Eventually, Katelyn agreed to go on a date with Cody, and they started a relationship. However, their relationship did not work out, and they went their separate ways.

In 2013, about a year after they graduated from high school, Katelyn and Cody worked their first jobs together at Dairy Queen. They started spending a lot of time together and went on a few dates. However, the timing was not quite right for them, and they again went their separate ways. Cody had enlisted in the US Army National Guard, and Katelyn was taking classes at Cal State San Bernardino.

In 2015, after years of no communication and unbeknownst to each other, Katelyn and Cody got hired at The Cheesecake Factory together. Although they were both in other relationships, their friendship picked up where they left off. Soon after training, Cody was deployed to Cuba, and Katelyn continued working as a server. Their relationships at the time did not work out, and they found themselves single upon Cody's return.

In December 2017, Cody went to The Cheesecake Factory to say hi to some of his old coworkers, not knowing Katelyn was still working there or happened to be working that night. Katelyn spent her entire break catching up with Cody. It was very apparent that their undeniable bond was still there, and the timing was finally right. A week later, they went out on their first date, and they have been together ever since.
