Option 1 is for those that will be driving, which is highly recommended otherwise getting around will be difficult. Public transport in the US is not great.

The best route from Boston is via the I-89 and the I-93 which are toll roads taking around 3 hours.
Otherwise if you'd rather not take the toll road it'll add an hour to your ride.
Quick Tip:
When Collecting a rental car many company's will offer you an EZ pass transponder for the toll roads and will charge you a daily fee for its use, its not necessary and will cost you a lot more than just paying the toll fee's once you hand the car back.
