<p>I met Kathryn 5 years ago and I wouldn’t exactly call it a “cute” love story. I was wrapping up with my final year at Princeton and had just left graduation after final securing class Valedictorian (something I had been working on diligently for 4 years). Unfortunately it was bitter sweet because my friends from the equestrian team had been planning a backpacking trip across the Pyrenees in Spain to celebrate graduation, but I was not able to attend. Chadwick, team captain and my arch rival, had conveniently forgotten to book my flight and options were limited due to the pandemic. As I was walking back to the family car to be driven back to Nantucket, I received a call from another teammate, Alejandro. He told me that Chadwick had fallen off his horse while practicing his dressage routine for the World Equestrian Games. Little did I know in that moment that an improperly secured horseshoe would put me on a path to meeting my true love. I quickly had my driver, Alfred, redirect us to the NewarkAirport so that I could meet up with my friends for the trip of a lifetime. Our crew consisted of myself, Alejandro, Charles, Francis, Oliver, and Percy. Oliver had secured his fathers private jet and we took off for Madrid. We wanted an authentic experience so we decided to ditch our fathers Amex cards and survive with only the things in our packs and a modest $50,000 cash that we each had. With the world at our finger tips, we headed off towards a small town at the base of the Pyrenees, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. Alejandro, Charles, Francis, Oliver, and Percy all went missing on the way there and were never seen again… I arrived in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port thirsty for adventure. I hadn’t had a proper Venti iced americano since I had left home and was advised by my limo driver to try a popular local spot called “Estarbucks”. The café had a sense of familiarity to it, something about the woman and the green logo made me feel right at home. After waiting 45 minutes for my order to be taken I started to grow impatient and approach one of the locals that worked there. I was obviously a bit angry for how long it was taking and I approached her and said “excuse me do you know how long I have been waiting”. When she turned around I was ready to receive my apology, but instead I was met with the most enchanting eyes I have ever seen. She mumbled something to me about being a stupid American and then proceeded to show me that I had to order at the counter. I apologized for the mix up and explained that I was visiting and not used to such customs. After I ordered, I tried to sit back down to continue reading the latest Colleen Hoover novel, Sappy Love Story, but the words seemed to vanish from the page. I was unable to do anything besides admire the beautiful woman who called me stupid.The next morning I left the small town of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port with the mysterious and beautiful woman from the café still on my mind, but I had a mission to complete. Go on a hike. Now I will admit, I had never gone backpacking, and I will even admit that I had never gone into the woods before, but I was confident that my recent binge watch of Man vs. Wild on Netflix gave me all the skills I needed to do it. To hike! Within an hour I was lost, scared, and alone. I was out of food and water (both of which I did not pack), and I didn’t know where I was. Despite these setbacks I knew I would be okay, 15 years of a semi stagedwilderness survival TV show watched in the span of 6 weeks had prepared me for this moment. And so I did the only rational thing left to do. I started screaming for help.For hours and hours I screamed. No one came to help. My hope was fading and I began to think back to all the things I wish I had done. Purchase a Lamborghini, hangout with a Kardashian, attend Burning Man (I had actually already been several timesbut each experience is its own). And as I laid down my head and began to close my eyes, accepting death, a figure began to loom over me. That’s when I heard the most beautiful words ever spoken, “stupid American”. My eyes opened in a flash, it was her. The woman from the coffee shop. Here. To rescue me.So it turns out I had wandered about 100 meters past the shopand she was coming over to tell me that I was scaring away the customers. But, she was still sympathetic to my cause and asked me if I wanted to come back with her and have a bite to eat. I couldn’t believe it! Our first date and I didn’t even know her name yet. We sat down and she had someone bring over a couple of Venti iced americano’s and sandwiches. It turns out that it was her favorite drink too. We spent the next few hours talking, laughing, and telling stories into the wee hours of the night. Eventually she told me that it was time for her to close upand I offered to help. I cleaned the dishes while she swept the floors and eventually we walked out and she closed up. I asked her if I would ever see her again and she quietly said “maybe” and started walking down the street. But before she turned a corner I asked “wait… you never told me your name”. She turned, smiled, and said “it’s Kathryn”</p>
