How We Met / The Proposal

How We Met - Katy's Version...

Last year on April 26th, I left my house and headed to a fundraiser for city council. I called Amber on the way and we were laughing and joking that since I rarely go out, the only way I’ll meet someone may have to be a political event. Little did I know…

When I arrived, I made small talk with the people that I knew and ended up talking with Scott towards the end. He mentioned meeting for coffee, but I knew he was busy preparing for the election. I said ‘sure’ but left it open and headed home.

The night before the election I sent Scott a message to tell him good luck on the race. He messaged me back and asked if I was stopping by the GOP to watch the returns. I was facilitating my grief group that night and couldn’t stick around. He said there were a few people getting together after, and I said I could meet after my meeting ended. We ended up chatting more and when we walked out of the restaurant, he asked if I wanted to go to dinner. Two weeks later, he picked me up and we went to Catablu for our first date. Spoiler alert – we hit it off!

How We Met - Scott's Version...

It was April 26, 2023 at Scott’s first campaign event for City Council, Scott was talking with a crowd of friends when he heard a VERY energetic and engaging voice from Katy, whom he had never met. “What’s your name?” he asked. She smiled and said “Hi, I’m Katy.” Scott was very impressed. Later that evening he asked her to get coffee sometime soon. She nodded but didn’t say much. Scott, unlike some of Katy’s favorite podcast subjects, was neither a stalker nor a serial killer…So he thought “oh well, maybe later.” The following week she messaged him on facebook and they exchanged a few texts. On primary day, May 8, Scott texted Katy asking her to “join us” for a victory party that night at Summit Grill. She did, and once again she brought her delightfully engaging energy. Scott asked her (again) to get together the following week and this time he had a bit more success as he heard her say “yes.” So the next week they had dinner at Catablu and afterward Katy shared with him some of her homemade ice cream. And they talked for a long time, as only Katy can!

The Proposal - Katy's Version...

At the beginning of February, Scott’s sister in law reached out, asking if we could meet Lauren (Scott’s niece) at a cemetery close to Taylor for an art project. I said absolutely, and started listing off most of the cemeteries in the county. I was able to meet Lauren, but Scott ended up working. I drove down after work, texting Lauren I was on my way, and she said she was as well. When I got there, I realized Scott was there, but Lauren wasn’t. I just assumed she was running behind and started cleaning up Kristin’s headstone. Scott brought Kristin flowers. It was muddy, and my boots were covered, so I put on my spare boots, grabbed some trash bags and rubber gloves and started cleaning up my boots. Scott’s asking if we could talk before Lauren gets there – no problem…I can multitask. He asked if I wanted to take my gloves off – nope…I’ll get my hands muddy. Maybe a kiss before Lauren gets there?- I pulled my hands up like I was doing the chicken dance, gave him a peck and said I could kiss him with gloves on. He asked if I was sure I didn’t want to take a break- nope…I’m just trying to get cleaned up before Lauren gets here. Eventually, he starts talking and I see a ring and rip of the gloves. He explained that from the time we initially started discussing getting married, I had said the hardest part was not having Kristin here. He said this was the closest he could do. I said “YES!”, and here we are.

The Proposal - Scott's Version...

Scott knew early on that Katy was his person. And he was glad that he had not settled for anyone less. But again, not being a stalker or serial killer, he enjoyed dating her and getting to know her in due time. Katy is a talented planner so it was not surprising that by early 2024 they had started thinking of what wedding plans look like. The first time they talked about it, Katy was moved with emotion. “It’s not fair” she said. Because “Kristin is supposed to be here.” Scott understood the depth of Katy’s love for her sister. A couple months later he had an idea… Since his niece Lauren is a student at Taylor University, he devised a plan (with help from Lisa, his sister-in-law) to have Lauren ask Katy to meet her at the grave site to help her do a sketch for a class. Instead Scott surprised Katy with flowers for both her and Kristin’s grave. She thought that was all. And you know that Katy tends to keep on the move, so he had to ask her to pause for a second and take off her gloves (which she used to do work around the grave site). Then she said yes!
