Nick and Kathryn met through club volleyball. Each were coaching for different clubs, but always managing to be at the same tournaments. After several weeks of chatting, Kathryn finally agreed to go out with Nick (thanks to her mothers advice). They found that they had more in common than their competitive natures and love for Marvel movies.

Nick originally had planned to ask Kathryn to marry him at a nice dinner at Maggiano's. Kathryn asked if they could see the new Aladin movie and go to a low key dinner instead. After going out for the night, Nick said something with intentions to annoy Kathryn and followed it up with his standard "I love you, lets get married" recovery line. Kathryn told Nick she didn't want to hear anything about the "M" word again unless it was real. Upon getting back to her parents home, Nick got down on one knee and asked Kathryn to marry him.
