Our Story

Olivia and Kathryn met at the University at Buffalo in the summer of 2013 at the freshman welcome picnic. Kathryn saw Olivia sitting alone at the picnic and invited her to sit with her group of friends. Olivia had remembered seeing Kathryn expertly weave her way through the crowd on the way to the picnic, and it left quite an impression, so she decided to join. From that moment on, Olivia and Kathryn became fast friends. &nbsp; Their relationship at first was just a friendship, sharing interesting music and movies, and discussing science and the world. Come January 2014, Olivia tried to impress Kathryn by joining the Ultimate Frisbee team, while Kathryn tried to impress Olivia by inviting her to all the "cool" Frisbee events. As their friendship grew, they realized that they meant much more to one another, and by the end of March, they were officially a couple and spent nearly every day together. Although they were both busy with school work and extracurriculars, they always found time for each other. This includes the many times that Olivia kept Kathryn company while she pulled an all-nighter for an art project due the next morning, visiting each other at work, countless times that Kathryn tutored Olivia in Chemistry, and the numerous walks and adventures they went on in the surrounding Buffalo area. As Kathryn and Olivia spent more and more time together, their relationship flourished. They planned a road trip to Colorado their Junior year, and needless to say, if you never once get bored listening to music, audio books, and talking with one person for a 23-hour drive one-way, there is a clear connection. Over the next several years, Kathryn and Olivia enjoyed camping and hiking with each other in the Adirondacks, road trips to Disney world and Maine, traveling to Canada and Italy, Bills games, and attending concerts. In the summer of 2018, they both moved to Rochester so that Kathryn could pursue her PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Rochester. They were now a package deal, becoming close to each other's families, supporting one another in the successes and struggles of work and school, and being each other’s favorite date at every event. It was clear that they were meant to be. Kathryn had plans to propose to Olivia by traveling to Switzerland in the summer of 2020, but that didn't happen. After waiting 2 years for the pandemic to be over, she realized that it was just time to propose. Disguised as their 8th year anniversary, they took a weekend trip to Toronto. After a morning of flower sanctuaries and beaver tails, Kathryn proposed to Olivia on the shore of Lake Erie, and she happily said yes. They are excited to invite their friends and family to finally share in the joy of their wedding.

Evan is Olivia’s older brother and dear friend. As with most siblings, Evan and Olivia had their feuds growing up. Sharing a bedroom certainly didn’t help. But, after finding their independence (and getting their own rooms), they became closer than ever. Evan and Olivia bonded over anime, video games, and unrestricted access to the early-2000s internet. Today, Evan is a new homeowner residing in the City of Rochester with his longtime partner, Shayna. Always the guy everyone would go to for computer help, Evan fittingly has a career in IT. In his free time, he is an avid cyclist, gun enthusiast, gamer and B-movie connoisseur. Evan has looked out for Olivia from the beginning, and continues to support her in all she does. He’s the ideal choice to serve as her Best Man. 

Evan Shamon

Eliana is a Productions Assistant for Film and TV, and Kathryn's best friend and honorary sister. Kathryn met Eliana in second grade, and after running up the hill to Eliana's house asking her to play, they immediately became friends. As children, they enjoyed searching for Hogwarts, picking berries, and playing orphanage, music, sports and games. As adults, they have explored the streets of NYC and Rochester together, introduced each other to board/card/video games, and have enjoyed being die hard Bills fans together. Despite the distance, whenever they get together, it is like no time has passed, and the conversation and jokes flow effortlessly. Eliana is very hardworking, creative, driven, and opinionated, and she has helped shape Kathryn's view of the world as if she was her very own sister. As a result, it was a no-brainer that Eliana should be Kathryn's Best Woman. 

Eliana Lustig

Kamy is a data scientist and Kathryn's best friend. Kathryn met Kamy in the Neuroscience Graduate Program when she joined the Cognitive Neurophysiology Lab. Starting initially as Kathryn's lab confidant, it became apparent that they had more in common than just loving the brain. With a similar sense of humor and enjoyment for horror movies, card/board games, and climbing, they became fast friends. Kathryn has always looked up to Kamy as she is a very bright and knowledgeable individual, and they bring out the best in each other. She has helped Kathryn so much from teaching her how to code, to giving life advice and being a really supportive friend. Kamy is a spontaneous spirit who is always down for something new, and her friendship brightens Kathryn's life. Therefore it was obvious that Kamy should be named her Vice Best Woman.

Kamy Wakim-Takaki

Shayna is one of Olivia and Kathryn's closest friends. They met at UB and immediately clicked through pop culture references, geekiness and shared classes. Since Shayna grew up near Buffalo, her family provided a much needed touch of home, with Shayna always extending invites to St. Patrick Day Parties and day trips up to Canada with her mom. Shayna and Olivia not only roomed together, but they even worked together, most notably at Family Video, where they shared some amazing times. When they managed different stores, they would call each other often, likely clogging up the phone-line for everyone trying to re-rent their DVDs. After college, Shayna ended up moving to Rochester and finding a job in real estate. She is now dating Olivia's brother, Evan (Olivia had a feeling they would hit it off).  While Shayna was initially shocked when Kathryn and Olivia told her they were dating over ice cream at Perk's, she has always been one of their biggest supporters.

Shayna Metzger

Sara is Kathryn's older sister as well as a great friend to both her and Olivia. She is a graphic designer, and a free spirit who is very creative and loves nature. Growing up with Sara was interesting, but they shared a love of horror movies and she taught Kathryn to be tough. As adults, it was very easy for Kathryn and Olivia to be friends with Sara as she always has amazing stories to tell, is constantly cracking jokes, and shares their sense of humor which keeps everyone laughing. If you are so lucky to have Sara in your circle, you will not only get a spontaneous entity that will enhance your life, but you will have a very caring, thoughtful, and loyal individual who will do her best to show you that she loves you. She would kill for you without hesitation. It was a very easy choice to have Sara as a Bridesmaid for Kathryn and Olivia.

Sara Toffolo

Rachel is Kathryn's younger sister. She is a pediatric nurse at Upstate Hospital, which rightfully suggests that she is very caring, but she's just bursting with personality. Because Rachel is 5 years younger than Kathryn, it is understandable that there was a fair amount of teasing growing up. However, Rachel is only serious when she has to be, so it was easy for them to become friends as they got older given their similar sense of humor. Rachel is charismatic, extremely witty (which makes for fun banter), and she is the best hype-man that you will find. Her only flaw is she's too "cool" for her own good. Rachel has always been supportive of Olivia and Kathryn, and they love having her as part of their life. It only made sense to make Rachel a Bridesmaid. 

Rachel Toffolo

Lee is Kathryn's older brother. He enjoys working as a software engineer in the space and defense sector. When he's not working, he's a family-man enjoying life with his wife Heather and two awesome kids, Nora and Elliot. Lee is a very clever and hardworking man, definitely a prankster and humorously blunt, but very loving, loyal, and an amazing father. Many of Kathryn's qualities are due to growing up with Lee; both of them have an inquisitive nature, are competitive, and they strive for success. Lee taught all of his sisters not just how to play Halo, but how to hold their own, and Kathryn has always looked up to him. It goes without saying that Lee is a rightful Bridesman for Kathryn and Olivia.
