Katie's Version:

Having recently moved to the central coast and just starting my career, I did what most people do in their early 20's and applied for a second job waitressing. I had never done it before, so showed up to my interview in full business clothes, 10 minutes early, with a resume + cover letter in hand. I was immediately greeted by a locked door - I peered through the window to see if anyone was inside but couldn't see anything. I knocked and waited - seconds later, I was greeted by the vivacious and always smiling Zach Brown. My immediate first thought when I saw him was "Oh he is going to be a problem for me". Within the first minutes of meeting him, it reconfirmed my initial internal monologue - he was handsome, personable, and utterly charming. We chatted back and forth while he worked and I waited for the interview. 2 hours later, the owner shows up and offered me the job.

I was mediocre at best when it came to serving tables, but the place was also a dumpster fire. I started to lean on Zach for help during service + passing him shifts when I was trying to keep up with my other job. He wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty and would jump in to help anyone that needed it. He would reassure me that everything was going to be okay when every table was full and we were out of literally everything on the menu. He genuinely listened when I would vent to him about about a stressful day I was having from balancing life, 2 jobs, and navigating the obstacles of a 20 something.

Starting off as co-workers laid the foundation for what our relationship has become. We depend on each other - we know when one of us needs a little more help on a given day. We handle difficult people + situations in life with a customer service smile in the moment, but know that we can share our true feelings with each other by offering either support or advice. We divide up our responsibilities to keep the ship moving forward. And most importantly, we communicate with kindness and understanding. I look back on that first moment of meeting Zach thinking how he would be a problem for me, but instead, he became my solution.
