On the night of April 20th, 2019, paths intertwined at L'Auberge Casino Baton Rouge. Katie, recently single and eager for a fun night out, had joined friends for drinks and laughter. Meanwhile, Matthew, ready to call it a night, found himself lingering at a nearby bar, waiting for his ride.
As Katie and her friends exited the casino, their eyes met. A spark ignited between them. Matthew, captivated by her beauty, couldn't help but notice her. His friend, nudged Matthew to point out Katie's friend, was redirected by Matthew's gaze. "No, her," he replied, his focus unwavering.
A brief introduction led to an exchange of numbers. The next morning, Matthew's early text inquired about Katie's well-being. Her reply, accompanied by a photo of her morning coffee, hinted at a budding connection. She extended an unexpected invitation: an extra ticket to the LSU baseball game that day. Despite his limited interest in the sport, Matthew accepted, eager to spend more time with her.
The baseball game marked the beginning of their shared experiences. Joined by Katie's co-worker, they spent the day together, following the baseball game with a round of Top Golf and enjoyed a late lunch at Texas Roadhouse. While this day wouldn't be officially labeled as their first date, it laid the foundation for a relationship that would blossom.
On April 27th, 2019, a day shy of six years of what's to be their wedding day, Katie and Matthew embarked on their first official date. A memorable occasion, attending the wedding of Matthew's cousin, Mr. and Mrs. Zeigler. This unique experience allowed Katie to meet a large part of Matthew's family in one day, a whirlwind introduction to the people who would soon become a significant part of her life.
In the weeks leading up to those three little words, Katie & Matthew felt their connection continue to grow. There was a sense of anticipation and excitement that hinted at something more. It was only three weeks after Matthew had asked Katie to be his girlfriend.
During their first visit to his family’s property in Plaucheville, as they sat in the driveway of “the white house,” Matthew reached into his pocket and pulled out a tiny jewelry bag. He presented her with a beautiful turquoise and gold bracelet. As he handed her the gift, he simply said, “I love you and I wanted you to have something to remember this moment by.”
Katie, who had been waiting for those words, took a breath and replied simply, “I love you too.”
Every day together is an adventure, but their shared love for travel has taken their relationship to new heights.
What began as a planned camping trip to the west turned into a spontaneous escape east during Hurricane Laura. Seeking safety and sunshine, they found refuge in Oak Mountain State Park in Alabama.
Their adventures have taken them far and wide. From the magical world of Disney to the luxurious beaches of Riviera Maya and the breathtaking landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, they've explored countless destinations. For shorter getaways, they've journeyed to the peaceful shores of the Gulf Coast, fall foliage in Arkansas and the vibrant colors of the Dallas Botanical Gardens. They've even conquered the slopes of Breckenridge, learning to ski together.
As they embark on their next adventure, a honeymoon in Europe, they're excited to see what the future holds.
Each year, a cherished tradition takes root at Yawn Station Christmas Tree Farm. With saws in hand, Matthew, Katie and Oakley 🐾 venture into the fields to select the perfect Christmas trees. Often, they return home with more than one, each tree carrying its own unique charm. This annual tradition fills their home with the scent of pine needles and the joy of the holiday season.
From leisurely bike rides along the scenic St. Tammany Trace to adventurous paddleboarding excursions, Matthew and Katie find joy in every outdoor pursuit. They've shared countless camping trips, hiking trails, and picnics with Oakley. When the day is done, they cozy up together for movie nights, creating lasting memories.

One afternoon, Matthew surprised Katie with an invitation to a hot air balloon ride—an adventure she'd dreamt of for years. She had questions, of course: tethered or free? Just the two of them? Could they bring snacks? Matthew confirmed it would be a romantic sunrise flight for two—a work perk he was thrilled to share with her. Katie’s heart fluttered. Could this be it? But Matthew’s casual demeanor and a less-than-ideal ring discussion a few days prior tempered her hopes. A bracelet arrived as a pre-balloon gift, "that's it," Matthew said, "no more surprises," further convincing her that a proposal wasn’t in the cards. Heartbroken but determined to enjoy the experience, Katie pushed her hopes aside.
The morning arrived, and as they drove to the launch site, Katie checked Matthew's pockets—no ring box. "Just enjoy the morning," she told herself. The sunrise was breathtaking, and Matthew, ever-prepared, had even packed snacks, per Katie's request, using the picnic basket as the perfect hiding place for the ring. Unbeknownst to Katie, Matthew had spent the previous day crafting the perfect ring box, a rhinestone Cinderella carriage, and had entrusted it to one of the balloon company staff for safekeeping.
As they soared above Zachary, Louisiana, Matthew got down on one knee, revealing the Cinderella carriage and the most stunning ring she could imagine. She said "yes!" without hesitation.
After landing, they floated on cloud nine all day. They shared breakfast before Matthew whisked Katie off for a "just engaged" manicure. That afternoon, they snuggled up for a movie featuring Disney’s live-action Cinderella. Their perfect day concluded with church and dinner at their favorite restaurant.
