MacFeaths: Origins

Katie and Mike share a very special holiday. It occurs each calendar year on a day of no particular significance. No one else has celebrated this day, yet many are witness to the event if they are lucky enough to stumble upon the location where this day is celebrated each year. The day is April 23rd, and it is called "Chipotle Day." This is where their story begins.

It is not when they first met; it is not their first kiss; it is not even when they first began dating; they simply…had lunch. On that day in 2013, lunch lasted close to five hours. Katie even skipped two classed to stay and continue talking with Mike – if you know Katie, you understand that this is a huge deal. And so they talked, learning details large and small about one another that, unbeknownst to them at the time, would serve as the foundation of a relationship that is now blossoming into a confident and trusting marriage. Every year since, on the 23rd of April, Katie and Mike go back to the same Chipotle, sit at the same table facing the same direction, and happily enjoy their time together as they did on that first fateful encounter.

Katie and Mike learned a lot about each other on that day, but the knowledge one acquires about their significant other means nothing if they cannot apply it to the process of maintaining a relationship. They would soon have to apply what they learned when facing their first obstacle – distance. Not long after the inaugural Chipotle Day, Katie left for Germany for three weeks and Mike was away at a music festival after that. No sooner had they started dating than they were apart for close to a month. What is, in most cases, considered a relationship killer became one of the first situations that represented the love and admiration that Katie and Mike felt toward one another. The age-old adage "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" can be appropriately added here. Learning how to be apart taught them how to be together.

Now that time management was firmly under their belts, the next situation to rattle the dynamics of Katie and Mike's relationship came in the form of a small, hairy, faun-colored, ever-hungry, pudgy, bug-eyed, flat-faced, turd-tailed wrinkle-thing aptly named Samwise Gamgee Feathers. The love that Katie and Mike felt toward each other was effortlessly shared with Sam the pug when he became part of the family on February 1, 2014. Since then, he has only strengthened their relationship and his presence continues to exemplify the flexibility, humility, and selflessness in each of their personalities. These qualities make the privilege of picking up poop at 4 am much more tolerable.

It was a surprise to absolutely no one when Katie and Mike got engaged on June 28, 2015. Mike proposed in their apartment on a random Sunday when Katie returned home from a trip with her quartet, GQ. They had just gone grocery shopping, Katie smelled bad from flying on a plane earlier that day, and they were just hanging around their apartment when Mike just couldn't wait any longer. It's not the most glamorous proposal story of all time, but it was perfect for them.

They picked Falling Branch Brewery for their wedding venue because…well, because beer. They look forward to their ups and downs, their pug stories, and all of their new adventures that life will throw at them. And of course, lunch at Chipotle.
