Kat and A.J. met in May 2018. They had each been hired to work the summer season of The Black Hills Playhouse and arrived a few days early for different reasons. A.J. was starting his sixth summer season with the company, but this was Kat's first year. Kat's friend Kat (confusing right?) had worked with A.J. the summer before and introduced them. As corny as it sounds, Kat knew the moment she saw A.J. sitting in a lawn chair outside the dining hall, that he was going to be a very important part of her life, she just didn't know how quite yet. She told him as much during their first few solitary days before the rest of the company arrived. Outside of work, the pair were together almost constantly for the next two weeks. It was at that point that they agreed that neither wanted just a summer fling, but they weren't sure they were up for long-distance. After a difficult conversation following a late night work-call, the two decided to take a break and reevaluate their feelings for each other in a few weeks. They lasted three days. On June 19th, 2018 they agreed to try and make long-distance work. For their first date as a couple, they enjoyed fine dining at Pizza Ranch, which pretty much set the tone for their entire relationship. No matter where they are, or how much time they have together, they enjoy the little things and make the most of every second together. The distance has made their love strong, but they can't wait to be together forever.

This was our first picture together. Kat wanted to show her mom the man she'd officially started dating.
July 02, 2018
We went to Bear Country! Does this picture look awkward? Don't judge, we had only been dating for two weeks
July 02, 2018
Aunt Tonkie and Uncle Brian Smith vacationed to the BHP to see Kat! The four of us saw the sights and ended up at a black light mini golf course. Kat and A.J. had been dating less than a month...
July 16, 2018
One of our favorite spots on our days off work was the mall food court arcade in Rapid City, SD.
July 23, 2018
For a friends birthday, a bunch of us went out and took an Old Tyme photo together. A.J. even used this picture in a Christmas gift he made for Kat later that year.

We had to see the world famous Jewel cave before the end of the summer!
August 18, 2018
Kat had never seen Needle's highway, so we woke up early and drove it before work in the last week of the season.
August 22, 2018
Why yes, we do look fancy, don't we? We're headed to the Rapid City speak-easy downtown. Our summer season was nearing it's end and this was our last hoorah before we all went our separate ways.
August 24, 2018
Yes, Kat was crying. We left BHP that morning and A.J. drove back to Nebraska, while Kat flew back to Missouri.

In a long distance relationship, there's a lot of videocalls. Even on birthdays.
September 08, 2018
This was the first wedding we went to together! It was in Omaha, NE, and Kat got to meet part of A.J.'s family for the first time. Yeah, we know we're cute.
September 08, 2018
We grabbed a bite at Burger King before the reception... A.J. wasn't thrilled about having his photo taken...
September 09, 2018
More video calls! But this one was too cute not to share.

Our first Christmas together! Kat brought hats for everyone. Are we even a little bit surprised?
January 05, 2019
We celebrated Christmas in January with the Preston Family because Kat worked at Bath & Body Works in Cape Girardeau, MO for the holiday season.
January 06, 2019
Our first time attending Mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nevada, MO. Mema Preston asked if we could have someone take our picture so she could scrapbook it. We never would have guessed we'd be getting married there two and a half years later. Nor could we have guessed that Mema would pass away before joining us on that special day.
January 07, 2019
A.J. taught Kat how to use her new Slow Cooker that she got for Christmas. Kat was so excited that she had to document it and send it to her mom.
January 08, 2019
After learning to use the Slow Cooker, Kat took A.J. on a hike to her favorite spot in Cape Girardeau: Cape Rock.
January 09, 2019
We enjoyed our dinner and movie night with Kat's roommate's cat. Unfortunately, Kat's cat was feeling too caddy to join.
February 10, 2019
Yes, more videocalls. Though it's not the same as BEING together, it was time SPENT together that helped our love grow. Long distance is hard, but so worth it when we put in the work.

Moving Day! After all the traveling, we packed up Kat's life into a UHaul (Thank you a million times to Dan, Dana, and Darrius Schott) and moved her to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to start her new job.
December 31, 2019
After two days of driving and a half day of unloading the UHaul, we took a break to check out Falls Park. The waterfalls were breathtaking.
March 06, 2020
Kat drove down to Lincoln, NE to visit A.J. and spend some time with his family. Little did she know, the soon-to-come pandemic would give her an excuse to stay with them for an entire month.
April 28, 2020
A.J. let Kat cut his hair for the first time. Now she's pretty much his permanent barber. Not bad for a COVID-cut.
May 14, 2020
A.J. kinda likes his birthday shirt from Kat. Fun fact: this was the first of our birthdays we'd been able to spend together since we started dating. Almost two full years... that's a lot of birthdays over videocall.
July 03, 2020
A.J. found the perfect view to watch fireworks... Kat's inflatable couch.
July 03, 2020
We went over to Sammi and Stephen Lowery's for a fun, socially-distanced BBQ.
July 04, 2020
Sparks fly! Get it?
July 10, 2020
We joined BHP staff for a working retreat to film some videos for their virtual kids' theatre camp. While in the Black Hills, we couldn't resist stopping at the BHP campus which had cancelled its summer season due to the pandemic.
August 27, 2020
A.J. proposed (on Kat's 24th birthday)! Nick caught this one right after A.J. stood up from kneeling on the gravel. Now that's commitment. After that, we all went kayaking.
August 28, 2020
We stopped for a break during the hike. It was kind of a long hike.
August 28, 2020
The day after A.J. proposed, Nick, Shelby, A.J., and Kat all went hiking at Starved Rock State Park. Nick snapped this pic for us to announce our engagement on Facebook.
