How to Get to Kalymnos Island
- Fly to Kalymnos:
The Kalymnos airport is small but scenic, and it is connected to the Athens airport a few times per week. The airline currently flying the Athens-Kalymnos route three or four times a week is Sky Express. If you choose to go this route, there is a flight from Athens to Kalymnos. When searching for flights, make sure you are looking at Kalymnos (JKL). Sometimes google flights will pull up flights to Kos even when searching for Kalymnos.
- Fly to Kos, then take the ferry from Kos to Kalymnos
Kos is a touristy island only 30 to 40 minutes away by ferry, and it has an international airport. Between April and October, all major European airports offer charter flights to Kos. When you land in Kos, take a taxi to Mastichari port. From there, catch the next ferry to Kalymnos. We recommend you book your ferry in advance, as last year the ferries were selling out and climbers were stranded: ferry tickets. Mastichari port is less than 10 minutes by taxi from Kos airport (7 km). There is also a bus from the Kos airport to Mastichari port. From Mastichari port, take the ferry to Kalymnos. There are several connections between Kos and Kalymnos every day (6-10, depending on season) year-round.
Once you arrive at the port, you can take a taxi, rent a scooter or rental car (if you are taking the ferry back this is an easy option since you can return it at the end of the week).
- Fly to Athens, then go to Piraeus Port and take a ferry to Kalymnos
The ferries to Kalymnos depart from Piraeus, a major European port and Athens’s main gateway to the Greek islands. From the Athens airport there are two ways to get to Piraeus: the suburban metro or the X96 express bus. The Athens airport has an excellent information desk; ask there and they will direct you. Ferries from Piraeus to Kalymnos run every 2-3 days. The trip takes about 12 hours and it is often overnight. Ferries in Greece travel year-round; however, timetables change often. So check the ferry timetable about a month prior to your travel dates to make sure you get the latest schedules (we have never tried this route).
