Our Wedding

We first met on an evening out with friends. As everyone mingled, my eyes kept finding their way over to Mike’s beaming smile. Shortly after introductions, we began talking about our interests and quickly discovered that we both frequented the nearby trails in Cherokee and Seneca parks! I’d be in my running shoes, and Mike on his mountain bike. We laughed thinking about all the possible times we had probably passed each other without knowing we’d eventually meet someday! Our first dates included hiking, running, and setting up a hammock between the trees along those very trails. Mike even put me on my first mountain bike! It felt so natural to be ourselves, to be playful in nature, and to laugh together. Eventually, we took trips to hike and camp in the Red River Gorge. There’s nothing quite like the quality of time you get when you leave the comforts of home and go backpacking in the woods together. It’ll show you a lot about a person when you accidentally leave an item behind, or if the weather changes in a way you didn’t expect. You can let something like that sour your trip, or you can take the opportunity to adapt and laugh about it together. Fortunately, we opt for the latter far more often than not! Since those formative days, we have hiked and biked many miles of trails together. We’ve stood on peaks in the high mountains of Colorado, rode through the desert in Utah, splashed in the ocean, and explored the lowcountry of South Carolina. It was there, on August 13, 2023, under the canopy of an old-growth Live Oak tree on Johns Island, when Mike got down on one knee and proposed. Our hearts are so full of joy to continue life’s path with one another, and to celebrate with each of you. Here’s to many more adventures and many, many more miles of trails together.

This is an astonishing specimen tree of the Live Oak species, Quercus virginiana. This tree is incredibly old, estimated to be between 300-400 years old and it is right here on Johns Island. As a child, Kayla’s grandparents would take her to play on her branches. However, now you may only gently touch and hug this tree, as preservation efforts are being taken to keep her thriving into her next century of life.
