Our Wedding

Deven and Kayla met during their freshmen year at Valparaiso University through mutual friends. They were not very close friends at first and usually only hung out in group settings. Sophomore year, they grew closer and attended the Pi Kappa Alpha formal together, getting lost in the snowy streets of Chicago on the way. The formal had been cut short, but their feelings for each other were just beginning to grow. After the formal, neither of them made a move on the other, secretly agreeing that it would only complicate everybody's friendship if it weren't to work out. They grew apart, only to find their way back to each other towards the end of their senior year. The summer after graduation, Deven and Kayla returned to their hometowns on opposite sides of Indianapolis. They continued to talk everyday and eventually made plans for their first date; dinner at Applebee's, followed by bowling. They continued seeing each other on the weekends, until Deven finally asked Kayla to be his girlfriend on November 6, 2021.

How We Met

On October 12, 2024, Deven had Kayla’s friends take her out on what seemed to be a “Girl’s Day” but would turn out to be the day Deven would propose. The girls had gone to brunch and to get their nails done when Deven had called them saying he was stranded with a flat tire and needed picked up. The girls drove to where he was “playing golf” at Fort Harrison State Park. When they got out of the car, Kayla’s sister, Brianna, had greeted them and took Kayla to a trail that led to a tree where Deven was waiting to propose. As he got down on one knee, their closest family members lined up and watched as she said the easiest yes of her life.

Brianna is Kayla's younger sister, and they have been best friends since day one. They grew up riding bikes and playing made up games with their cousins and the neighborhood kids. Anytime Kayla has needed advice or help with anything, she has known that she can count on her sister to be there for her.

Brooke is Kayla's cousin, and also took part in the made up games they played as kids. Sleepovers at Brooke's house are some of Kayla's favorite childhood memories. They would stay up late laughing, playing board games, and watching movies!

Jade is also Kayla's cousin and they have so many fun memories of being at grandma's house together. They would play with the cats and watch scary movies. Jade and Kayla love to have craft nights together on the weekends!

Jasmine is Kayla's best friend that she met her freshman year of college. They could not have been farther from friends when they first met, but once they started talking, they couldn't stop. Jasmine and Kayla were roommates during their senior year and have shared some of the best times together.

Hannah is also Kayla's best friend, whom she met while working at Applebee's. They were the best of Applebuddies and ran the Carside To-Go like it was the Navy. Hannah and Kayla would always get their nails done together and go out on the weekends during their time in Valpo.

Treavor, Deven's cousin, and his brother Tyler have been Deven's favorite people to spend time with throughout all of his life. Sleepovers and holiday parties with these two were a huge source from which Deven developed his love for laughter. The three of them, along with Deven's sister, Ellie, are even said to have "their own language" with which they can make each other fall over laughing, much to the confusion of the rest of the room.

Treavor Lakes

Tyler, Deven's cousin, and his brother Treavor have been Deven's favorite people to spend time with throughout all of his life. Tyler Lakes

Ethan is Deven's best friend and fraternity brother from Valpo. They met on freshman move-in day when they found themselves moving in across the hall from one another. They both love to golf, and every summer he and Deven team up to compete in Ethan's country club's member-guest tournament (they are currently reigning champions of their handicap bracket).

Ethan Peck

Aden is Deven's cousin, who is the first family member besides his own sister that Deven had the chance to watch grow up from the time Aden was just a baby. There are very few things Deven values more than having gotten to coach and mentor Aden in baseball, as he grew up. Deven has aspired to be someone Aden could look up to for as long as he can remember.

Andrew Benson is Deven's fraternity brother and friend from Valpo. For their senior year at Valpo, he and Deven were roommates in an off-campus house dubbed "The White House". So many of Deven's favorite college memories took place in that house and alongside Andrew.
