Both Tampa (TPA) and Clearwater (PIE) are within 25 minutes of downtown St Pete. Sarasota would be a little over an hour.

If you are hoping to get in some beach time on this trip the beach is approximately 20 minutes from Downtown. There is a bus called the SunRunner that runs from downtown to the beaches at 5$ max per day.
