The&nbsp;<a href="http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=450" target="_blank">tall and majestic redwood forest</a>&nbsp;of Armstrong Redwoods State Park is only a 20 minute drive from Sebastopol. Stroll among these ancient beings and experience your “relative youth.” Settled in canyons and mountains with beautiful ferns at their base and dappled sunshine peaking through the canopy, some of these trees date from before the arrival of Columbus. The Colonel Armstrong tree is over 1400 years old! The&nbsp;<a href="http://www.sonomacounty.com/destinations/redwoods-rivers" target="_blank">Russian River</a>&nbsp;offers canoeing and kayaking opportunities just 15 minutes away from Sebastopol. There are boats you can rent by the day or hour, and several swimming beaches along the river. Anglers will find quiet pools away from the crowds where they can enjoy a bit of fishing. Hikers will find several parks and beaches with riverside trails. And those who like to bike can cruise along scenic routes that follow the course of the river. The wild and raw&nbsp;<a href="http://www.sonomacounty.com/destinations/coast-sea-villages" target="_blank">Sonoma Coast</a>&nbsp;is only 30 minutes from Sebastopol and offers breathtaking views of the vast and dramatic Pacific Ocean. From the quaint charm of the Bodega Bay fishing town to a gorgeous drive along Highway 1, you can easily visit the 1812 Russian settlement at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.fortross.org/" target="_blank">Fort Ross</a>&nbsp;to the north or&nbsp;<a href="http://www.nps.gov/pore/index.htm" target="_blank">Point Reyes Peninsula</a>&nbsp;to the south.

This area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and reflects the dynamic impact of the railroad on our city. Today, it features vintage shops, charming boutiques, and eclectic restaurants.

Railroad Square Historic District

The Laguna de Santa Rosa&nbsp;forms the eastern boundary of thecity limits and gives you access to an astoundingly rich wetland eco-system, all within a 10 minute walk from downtown. The Laguna is a 22 mile channel that is the largest tributary of the Russian River. It drains a watershed of over 30,000 acres in the Santa Rosa plain, following a pattern of wide, shallow ponds in the winter and spring, with dry fields and a stream in the summer and fall. An important stopover on the Pacific Flyway, the Laguna hosts over 200 species of birds ranging from bald eagles and herons to lively sparrows and hummingbirds. Other wildlife include mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, mink, badgers, and river otters. Many local residents kayak in January and February when the Laguna becomes a lake. The most scenic year round view of the Laguna from town is to park beside the Youth Annex at the north end of Morris St. and walk along the Eddie Aho trail. In the summer, at the south end of the Laguna Wetland Preserve, there is often a pontoon bridge so visitors can cross over the water and enjoy hiking and birding in Meadowlark Field. The Laguna Foundation offers year round classes and hikes, volunteer opportunities, and art exhibits at the Stone Farm Environmental Center north of town.

The Laguna de Santa Rosa

Ragle Ranch Park&nbsp;sits at Sebastopol's western edge and provides 157 acres of wild oak savannah with a trail to Atascadero Creek. In addition to hiking, the large footprint of Ragle Ranch Park also offers equestrian riding, a leash-free dog park, a duck pond, and amenities such as a playground, picnic benches, soccer fields and volley ball and tennis courts. In mid-August, the oak-studded fields of Ragle Ranch serve as home to the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.gravensteinapplefair.com/" target="_blank">Gravenstein Apple Fair</a>, Sebastopol’s salute to its heirloom apple. Ragle Ranch Regional Park in west Sebastopol features soccer and softball fields, tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, a playground, off-leash dog park, peace garden, and group and individual picnic sites with barbecues.&nbsp;The park is noted for its beautiful oaks and includes backcountry trails along the prime bird-watching habitat of Atascadero Creek. Ragle Ranch Regional Park contains 3.56 miles of trails with excellent birding and wildlife-viewing opportunities.

The Joe Rodota Regional Trail is an 8.5-mile paved, off-road trail linking downtown Santa Rosa and Sebastopol. This accessible trail runs parallel to Highway 12 and is a popular route for cyclists, walkers, and runners. Its rural sections offer beautiful views of farmland, the Laguna de Santa Rosa and surrounding mountains.&nbsp;Fall and spring are particularly beautiful times of the year to use the trail.

The Joe Rodota Trail

The West County Regional Trail is a mostly paved, 5.5-mile trail linking Sebastopol, Graton and Forestville. The path is separated from Highway 116 and offers views of farms, pastures, and vineyards.&nbsp;The trail is popular for walking, running, and cycling. Spring and fall are particularly beautiful times of the year to take in the surrounding countryside. Just north of Graton, a section of the trail becomes an elevated boardwalk to pass through the Atascadero Creek Ecological Reserve, an ecologically important wetland.&nbsp;The northern tip of trail leading into downtown Forestville follows an unpaved community path.&nbsp;

The West County Trail

Food & Spirits Farm-to-table restaurants, ciders from our heritage Gravenstein apples, organic farms, and small family run vineyards are just some of the culinary pleasures Sebastopol has to offer. Farms Check out the year long&nbsp;<a href="http://www.sebastopolfarmmarket.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sebastopol Farmer’s Market</a>, every Sunday 10:00 – 1:30 in the downtown Plaza. Artisan cheeses, locally baked breads, herbs, sprouts, handspun wool, teas, produce and flowers all make a bountiful appearance each week. Children play in the fountain. Musicians play in the Gazebo. Enjoy dancing to the music, or take your turn with a hula hoop! Visiting from out of town? You can buy lunch at the Farmers’ Market. There are a wide range of options including organic breakfast and lunch fare, homemade tamales, sushi burritos, Indian curries and from-scratch paella.&nbsp;&nbsp;Western Sonoma County is home to many small family farms.&nbsp;Check out&nbsp;<a href="http://www.farmtrails.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sonoma County Farm Trails&nbsp;</a>to find maps to farms you can visit, U-Pick farms, events at local farms, and farms that offer overnight lodging. The Gravenstein Apple Indeed, Sebastopol's agricultural heritage runs deep.&nbsp;Their heirloom apple, the Gravenstein, is known for its crisp, slightly sweet, slightly tart flavor. In the early 1900’s there were over 11,000 acres of Gravenstein orchards. The Gravenstein is Sebastopol's town emblem. (Notice the apple sculptures around town!) Sebastopol celebrates the springtime with the&nbsp;<a href="http://appleblossomfest.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Apple Blossom Festival</a>: a delightful home-town parade down Main Street on Saturday morning and live music, dancing, food and crafts over the rest of the weekend. And then at harvest time in mid-August, no one wants to miss the&nbsp;<a href="http://gravensteinapplefair.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gravenstein Apple Fair</a>, dubbed the “sweetest Little Fair in Sonoma County.” Bring the kids to the oak studded fields of Ragle Ranch park to see the draft horses, watch the little two-stroke antique engines at work, or enter the pie-eating contest. Dance to live music, sing along with the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.lovechoir.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Love Choir</a>,&nbsp;and enjoy local food, arts and crafts. Something for everyone at this delightful village hoe-down. Wine, Beer and Spirits Sebastopol is also part of the Wine Country.&nbsp;For those in search of food & spirits, there are wine-tasting rooms in the historic downtown, and at the Barlow, Sebastopol's make-sell center where you can meet the people who make the wine, beer and spirits, often right there on the premises.
