Yes.... Sadly the I-17 is the only realistic travel path between Flagstaff and Phoenix. On Fridays heading north from Phoenix it is common to see traffic backups starting in the late afternoon which usually starts to ease around sunset point (mile marker 252 roughly 50 miles north of phoenix). On Sunday it is common to run into traffic backups at any point in the day heading southbound towards Phoenix, in either case it is not uncommon for traffic to add upwards of an hour to your drive time.
