Our Story

Kelsey's Version

Kelsey first remembers meeting and seeing Luke in November of 2013. Chelsea had invited Kelsey to hang out that night with her friends. While Kelsey doesn't like to admit this, she had a small crush on Luke the first time she met him. He was funny and smart, and she knew she wanted to see him again. Kelsey kept her crush a secret for a while, and tried to find many excuses to be with Chelsea and her friends again. Kelsey and Luke next connected at a women's cross country Christmas party, because Mitch sent Luke an SOS text when there was too much female energy in the house, requesting a male presence to balance it out. Kelsey was happy to see Luke in his "stupid snowflake hat," however continued to keep her crush pretty secret. Fast forward to the end of Christmas Break, January of 2014. Kelsey confided in Chelsea at a party that she had a small crush on Luke. Chelsea swore she wouldn't tell anyone, which is code for, "I will immediately tell Mitch." One thing lead to another, and about 5 minutes later Luke approached Kelsey about what he had heard through the rumor mill. While Luke and Kelsey wouldn't make things official until almost half a year later, this is when the sparks started flying. It was one week later that the first Spring Break trip was planned (many of the spring breakers a part of this tradition are now members of the bridal party). By the time June 2014 rolled around, Kelsey and Luke made it official as boyfriend and girlfriend. A couple of years apart and a few moves later, grad school, field camps, and internships, Kelsey and Luke are now living together in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and in May 2019, Luke decided to get down on one knee and ask Kelsey to marry him. October 1, 2021 will be the last time we make it "official," forever.

Luke's Version

After Kelsey and Luke started dating in June 2014, things had changed for both of them. Shortly after, Luke got into graduate school at Illinois State University and Kelsey began racing very well at the University of South Dakota. Even though their lives were heading separate directions, they always managed to lift each other up so they could achieve each others goals. After years of bouncing back and forth between South Dakota and Illinois, both ended up living in Kenosha together. After a full year both Kelsey realized this was the best she could do and twisted Luke's arm into buying the exact ring she wanted no matter the costs. After dipping deep into his savings (to which he was saving for his geology trips and stuff), he did as she asked. Now the two (with lots of hard work) are living happily together, eagerly (not really) waiting for the the big day.

This is the closest major airport if you are needed to fly in to attend our wedding, located about an hour and a half from the venue.

Ask to book under the block for the Barrett-Chabela Wedding. Must book by August 27th, 2021 for block rate. Check-in time is 3:00 p.m. Accommodations can be made for a certain number of early check-ins with advance notice. There is an additional charge for anyone checking in before 1:00 p.m. ($20-noon check in &amp; $10- 1:00 p.m. check in). This hotel is 15 mile, 23 minute drive from the ceremony and reception venue.

Please call Motel to make reservation under our block, requesting the "Barrett-Chabela Wedding." If you are interested in camping, you can also contact this site to book a campsite, however no campsites are blocked off. This motel is a 6 mile, 11 minute drive from the ceremony and reception venue (the campsite is the same distance). Please book a room by September 1, 2021 to receive the block rate.

Shuttle Services

Jim and Dana Schmidt, parents to a bridesmaid and family friends to the bride, will be providing shuttle services to any guests to get from the reception to their overnight accommodations. The shuttles will be running between the times of 8pm-11:30pm.

High school best friend of Luke's, and college best friend and teammate to Kelsey, Chelsea played the role of introducing the couple to one another, and so it only seems fit that she will also play the role of *officially* tying the knot for them.

Carly and Kelsey met their freshman year as teammates on the XC & track team at USD. While adjusting to collegiate running and schooling was hard, becoming close was not! From there they became roommates, and more importantly, best friends!

While  Lottie and Kelsey started out as rivals and arch nemeses as South Dakota high school state cross country champions, the stars aligned when Lottie joined the USD Coyotes as Kelsey's teammate, and they went on to become roommates and best friends.

Kelsey and Shanley have been best friends since elementary school. Their best memories spent together consist of spying on the neighbor boys, sleepovers with many snacks, taking way too many photos together, working together at the Strand Theater, and playing many games of MASH. 

Shanley (Ramsey) Wolf

While Kaleigh and Kelsey only ran together for one year at USD as freshmen, Kaleigh lives up to the motto, "Once a Yote, always a Yote." Kaleigh has remained one of Kelsey's life long friends and biggest fans all the way from the East Coast! 

Kaleigh (Durkan) Costa

Kelsey and Brook, often called "B," met while running together as teammates for the USD Coyotes. Oftentimes Kelsey will refer to Brook as her "twin" as they often were mixed up by faculty in the athletic department while running around Vermillion. Brook joins Kelsey's bride squad as the well known life of the party!

Kelsey and Reeba go back as early as 2009, where they met and became co-members to the South Dakota Presbyterian Youth Council. While they've never resided in the same location, they've remained life long, long distance best friends, and even have matching tattoos to prove it! 

Reeba (Thompson) Sullivan

Kelsey and AmyLeigh go way back, as their moms were friends in high school. Many of their memories consist of singing in choirs, sharing a headphone on the cross country bus, and lots of laughing and hugging. Ready to add one more memory, a wedding, to the books together! 

AmyLeigh (Jones) Jonson

Also known as "Patricia," the wigged woman who helped the couple photograph their engagement, Alena met Kelsey while attending school at Illinois State University, where Luke was getting his Masters. Many a study date at Buffalo Wild Wings formed an unbreakable bond and friendship between the two.

The transition for Kelsey and Nicole from "teammates" to "soul sisters," was quick and effortless. While the two couldn't be any more different on the track, they owe their gratitude to Dan the Man and somehow having a similar Vo2 max for bringing them together during the best and worst times of running, eventually leading to the best times of life together.

Megan started as Kelsey's manager at Rue21, and after ordering many pizzas to eat behind the cash wrap, Kelsey mustered up the courage to invite herself along to a night out with Megan. The two became best pals, found better jobs, more places with the best "bad for you" food, and grew even closer!

Emily and Kelsey worked together at Rue21. Their friendship became official after they completed the daunting task of creating a boot wall from floor to ceiling at Rue21. They rewarded themselves with burger baskets at Brew-Ha's, and by becoming best pals and eventually roommates.

Kelsey and Avery met when they got hired around the same time at Emack and Bolio's, an ice cream shop. After many shifts of scooping ice cream, the two eventually were able to form a friendship, roadtrip out to South Dakota and Wyoming, and be roommates for some time.

Step-brother to the bride. While they didn't spend all of their childhoods together, that didn't change them becoming close as siblings, bonding over trips to the KreeMee and driving around in Aaron's old pickup.

Younger brother to the bride. Kelsey managed to keep him alive as a babysitter in his very young years, and the two have remained close, despite Collin's incessant teasing over opposing tastes in sports teams ( GO VIKES, GO YOTES).
