We will be having a traditional Orthodox Christian ceremony! We know that many of our guests don't have a background in Orthodox Christianity, and we want to provide insight on what will be happening during the ceremony!
The first thing you will notice is that all guests will be asked to remain standing, if you are able to, for the majority of the ceremony. This is a sign of respect in the Orthodox tradition. The service will be about an hour long, so be prepared and wear comfortable shoes!
Crowns
The priest will place crowns on our head during the ceremony, and will exchange them 3 times as a symbol of unity. The crowns represent the concept of martyrdom, as marriage requires self-sacrifice. They also symbolize commitment of the bride and groom to one another and the responsibility they have to rule their home with love, wisdom, and integrity.
The Common Cup
The Common Cup ritual is based on the Gospel story about the miracle at the wedding at Cana. This cup is filled with blessed wine, and has taken the symbolic place of the Eucharist in modern times. The cup represents life, and symbolizes the couple's mutual sharing of joy and sorrow. It signifies that a transformation is taking place, to a new life in marriage.
The dance of isaiah
Towards the end of the ceremony, the priest will lead the couple around the wedding table three times. This ceremonial walk represents the couple's first steps as husband and wife, as well as their gratitude and joy at being joined by God.
