They had each planned to pop the question on their August 2024 vacation, but didn't know anything else about what the other had planned. It just so happened that they ended up with Christina's proposal on one day and Kenzie's the next!
Christina had crafted several "beans" (Kenzie's nickname) that each spelled out a part of the message, giving one to her on each day leading up to the proposal:
"Will you...be...my...bean...forever?"
The final "bean" was given to Kenzie on a day trip to a small town in the Netherlands with windmills, cows, and plenty of cheese. Kenzie sensed something was up during a scenic bike ride through the countryside, but it turned out Christina really was stopping to apply sunscreen so often, that part wasn't a ruse. They finally stopped in a quiet spot with a view of three windmills. Christina set up her phone to record (before almost completely stepping out of frame) and tried really hard not to cry as she read a heartfelt message before asking the big question. Kenzie said yes (of course), and then three nice tourists walking by were thrilled to take some pictures for them. The man with them didn't quite understand what was going on (and took a few selfies for good measure) until the two other women explained it to him to which he exclaimed "Maridos?!" Close enough.
Kenzie, always with the competitive spirit, was slightly disappointed not to be the first to propose, but she put so much detail and planning into the next day that it was no less special. She snuck out early in the morning and left a wake up alarm for Christina with their favorite song. She left out a hand-made scrapbook of their memories together, filled with post-it notes of sweet messages Kenzie had left behind on her early mornings throughout the years. At the end of the book was a map to a park just around the corner where she told Christina to meet her. Kenzie met up with Christina, umbrella in hand as it started to drizzle, and led her to a secluded park along one of the Amsterdam canals. Over on a picnic blanket there were hand-pinned post it notes with those little messages that Kenzie had collected over the years, spelling out:
"Marry Me?"
Christina said yes (again, of course), and they soaked up the moment together before taking some pictures with the photographer Kenzie had sneakily booked (shout out to the amazing Maartje @maartjehensen on ig).
