Kevin and Maya had multiple close mutual friends for years. Kevin was even friends with her dad before meeting her!

Around the time they met, they each had two special people in their lives moving away. Kevin's best friend, Andrew, who happens to be Maya's cousin, was moving to start boot camp in North Carolina, and Maya’s best friend, Jasmine, was moving to Florida. At a time that was meant to be bitter, they managed to find some sweetness by finding each other.

The first time they spoke was at Andrew’s going away party. Kevin's friend Marc walked in with candy and offered Maya a Reese’s peanut butter cup, Kevin was standing nearby and thought to himself he could probably go for half a Reese’s peanut butter cup. Maya then said out loud, “I’ll take a Reese’s peanut butter cup, but I think I can only eat half of it right now”.

They split the Reese’s and the rest was history.
