Kevin and Alexis met in July of 2023 while on a Catholic hiking retreat in Colorado. The two ended up being put in the same hiking group while hiking to a waterfall in Vail, Colorado. When arriving at the waterfall, Kevin stated, "I wish there was something that we could float down the waterfall." Alexis then replied, "Well let's make something." Kevin and Alexis then proceeded to make a sailboat out of gathered sticks and leaves. Prior to launching the makeshift sailboat down the waterfall, Kevin said, "We need to name it. Pick a letter." Alexis thought about it and said, "J!" Immediately Kevin said, "Joy" and Alexis was shocked that he had thought of the word "Joy" after the letter J was mentioned.

The hike continued past the waterfall to a lake that involved a lot of deep conversations between the two. The following day the two were put in the same group again and talked even more while hiking. Later that night, people were talking about their favorite moments of the day. Kevin shared that his favorite part of the day was the conversation had during the first hour hike up the mountain. This was when the two talked and grew closer. Alexis then shared that her favorite part of the day was the conversation had in the beginning of the hike as well. No one in the group knew that the two were talking about each other but Kevin and Alexis knew what was being hinted. Later that evening Kevin discretely got Alexis's number while talking in a large group.

Then the next day, while getting ready to drive home to Kansas, Kevin pulled Alexis aside to make plans for the two car groups to meet up for lunch. Alexis agreed and the two worked to set up a meeting spot while on the drive back to Kansas. After meeting for lunch, the two parted with their different car groups to head back to Kansas. However, severe weather occurred and the two car groups randomly ended up at the same Catholic Church in the middle of Kansas for shelter.

Alexis's carpool group had arrived to the church first where Alexis was praying for the safety of Kevin and his carpool group. Within five short minutes, the back doors of the church opened and Kevin walked in with his carpool group. The two made eye contact, smiled at each other, and then continued in silent prayer discerning the future of being with the other. The day after arriving back in Kansas, Kevin asked Alexis out on their first date at the Nelson Atkin's Art Museum. While still on the first date, a second and third date was planned.

Since then, the two have worked on growing in the Catholic faith while meeting with friends and family along the way. Kevin and Alexis took a trip to Kevin's home state (New York) in December where they got engaged. The two are excited about the future and can not wait to celebrate the sacrament of holy matrimony in the presence of all of their family and friends.
