It all started in February 2018, during a union training session at Overland Park, KS. We were there for work, surrounded by colleagues, but little did we know that this would be the day our lives would change forever. Kenny first noticed me from across the room and felt an instant connection, and waited for the perfect opportunity to come and talk to me. After some time, he mustered the courage to sit beside me during a game that tested our knowledge of state capitals. It was during this game that we started to bond, sharing laughs and friendly competition. When the training ended, we returned to our respective cities, with Kenny heading back to Jefferson City, Missouri, and me heading back to Junction City, Kansas. We were 4.5 hours away, but that didnt stop us from staying in touch. I called Kenny a week later, and the rest is history. We exchanged phone calls every day, talking about anything and everything—our conversations lasting for hours. It became clear that we shared a passion for audiobooks, which added another layer to our connection. One of the most memorable moments came after the union reception dinner, when we decided to hit the karaoke bar. Kenny, in true form, jumped on stage and surprised everyone by belting out “Macho Man” while dramatically taking off his shirt and belt! That night was a perfect reflection of his fun-loving spirit and was a moment that brought us even closer. From training sessions to spontaneous karaoke performances, our journey began that night—the spark that would lead to a beautiful love story.

This very special person is the mother of the bride. Her name is Ligaya (in English meaning “joy” or “happiness”). Known for her boundless love and unwavering support, she’s been a guiding light in her children’s lives. Beyond being a devoted mother, she delights in her role as grandmother to Linda, Camila, Legend, and Sariah!

Meet papa! He is a remarkable and resilient person, having gone through some major health issues but is still loving life and working hard. He is an amazing singer and has won many competitions in the Philippines! When he’s not working, you’ll find him out fishing, spending time outdoors, and singing in the church choir. One of the many memories I have of Dad is his recollection of his time in the Philippines, catching fish to bring food to the dinner table for his mom, brothers, and sisters.

Now, it's my honor to introduce a truly special person, our Maid of Honor, Jessica Dela Cruz-Alvarado. While she may officially be Kimberly’s cousin, she's been an integral part of our family for so long that Kimberly sees her as an adoptive sister and she honestly couldn't imagine life without her. She is mother to Aysten, wife to Austyn, and is a preschool teacher, making huge impacts on future generations.

Next up, we have a very special person in Kenny’s life – his brother, Jonathan. Beyond being a sibling, he is a father of 3 (Hunter, Colt, and Dolly) and husband to Kenzie. He is known for his love of bowling and golf and likes to spend time competing in bowling tournaments. Jonathan works as a heavy equipment operator.

Meet one of the Groom’s brothers, Christopher “Tubbs” Long! When he’s not at work fixing boats and jet skis out at the Lake of the Ozarks, he is typically hanging out with friends and family and tinkering with some other mechanical projects at home. He was a lot cooler when he had his mullet.

Meet the younger brother of the bride, Brian! Dad to his son, Legend, and husband to his wife, Shonacee. Brian and Shonacee are expecting a baby girl soon! When he's not on the mats practicing jiu jitsu, you can probably find him hanging out with his family — out by the water, hoping to catch some good eats (crab and fish), hunting with family on Lanai, or chilling at home. He’s a hard working man who works as a sheet metal worker to provide for his family.

Wife to the Bride’s brother, Brian, Shonacee has become an essential pillar to the family. She is more than a sister-in-law — she is a trusted friend, supporter, and now, proud co-maid of honor! When she’s not working as a Nurse Practitioner, she’s holding down the fort at home, visiting family in Lanai, or just spending time with family on O’ahu. From the moment she entered the family, she fit right in! Her passions include spending time at the beach, gymnastics, and crabbing/hunting.

This is Grandma Rose! She is the only remaining grandparent of Kimberly and has a way of exuding warmth and kindness to everyone she meets. She has a passion for gardening and tending to her plants/flowers at home. One of my most cherished memories of Grandma Rose: whenever she cooked ginataang bilo bilo (sticky rice balls in coconut milk), I always enjoyed picking out the mochi balls to eat while it was still hot! She also seems to really enjoy making Kenny a big batch of Adidas (chicken feet soup)!

Turo is a rental car service much like Airbnb. People list their own vehicles on the Turo website, and others can rent them out for a short time. When booking, check the availability of the vehicle you are wanting to rent and be mindful of any cleaning fees and any other requests (topping fuel off before returning the vehicle, for example). Normally, this is the cheapest of all the rental car companies since the hosts are the ones to decide the rental price. Keep in mind, the fancier the vehicle, the pricier!

Hau’ula, where the wedding will take place, is located on the northeastern part of O’ahu island. If you’d like to stay on the north shore, be aware that prices will more than likely be higher in those areas (Kawela Bay/Turtle Bay versus Honolulu, if you wanted to compare).

Camp Erdman provides you with a place to stay, stunning views, and you just need to bring the food and fun. YMCA membership isn’t required to book a beachfront yurt, cabin, or hale (hawaiian translation = house). Keep in mind though: weekend stays require a 2-night minimum. Note: if you haven’t noticed yet, the word “kama’aina” will pop up quite a bit when looking at lodging, things to do, and so forth. You’ll see this term everywhere! This term refers to locals, who will be given discounts upon showing a Hawaii-issued state ID.

Another lodging option! Everything I’m seeing for the dates in June range anywhere from $250 to $1900+ per night. If staying in one of the higher end hotels/condos, it would be best (or smart!) to split costs if traveling in larger groups.

Every time Kenny and I come to visit, we gotta stop by Leonard’s malasadamobile in Waipahu for their delicious malasadas. For those of you who don’t know, a malasada is a Portugese doughnut without a hole. They’re generously-sized fried balls of dough that are golden brown on the outside and light & fluffy on the inside. You can have them with plain sugar, or filled with chocolate, haupia, or vanilla. The bakerys malasadas were Foodspottings top Hawaii food find, and USA Today described the doughnuts as having become a Hawaiian icon. You’ve got to try it at least once!

The Polynesian Cultural Center is a living museum and a top attraction in Hawaii, located on the North Shore of Oahu. It features six authentic Polynesian villages, each representing a different island culture (Hawaii, Fiji, Aotearoa (New Zealand), Samoa, Tahiti, and Tonga). Visitors can immerse themselves in Polynesian traditions, arts, crafts, music, and dance, as well as enjoy a luau and the evening show HĀ: Breath of Life.

Ever wondered how pineapples are grown in Hawai’i? Founded in 1950 as a fruit stand, the Dole Plantation in central Oahu now draws travelers to its famous pineapple harvests and open-air Pineapple Express Train. Sign up for an educational tour to learn how the fruit of Hawaii is grown, its rich history, and agricultural practices. After that, stroll in the giant pineapple-shaped garden maze lined with 14,000 fruits. Don’t leave without buying some pineapples and sampling the original pineapple Dole Whip.

With its pristine beaches, vibrant nightlife, lush tropical landscapes, and world-class accommodations, Waikiki is an oasis of relaxation and adventure and is the very birthplace of surfing! Waikīkī is home to world-class dining & shopping, entertainment such as the Honolulu Zoo and Waikīkī Aquarium, with everything you could possibly want within walking distance from the beach! Don’t forget to take your own iconic pictures of Diamond Head Crater.

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is a stunning and unique destination located on the southeastern side of Oahu, Hawaii. Formed within a volcanic cone, this pristine marine ecosystem offers visitors an amazing place to snorkel and explore the diverse wildlife that inhabit the area. The bay is protected by vertical crater walls and a peripheral reef which help keep the water calm and tranquil, making it an ideal spot for swimming, snorkeling, and observing marine life. Visitors can expect to see hundreds of species of fish, coral, and other aquatic creatures while exploring Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve.

Built in 1882 by King Kalākaua, ʻIolani Palace was the home of Hawaiʻis last reigning monarchs and served as the official royal residence. ʻIolani Palace was the royal residence of the rulers of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi beginning with Kamehameha III under the Kamehameha Dynasty and ending with Queen Liliʻuokalani under the Kalākaua Dynasty. It is located in the capitol district of downtown Honolulu.

The refreshing Hawaiian wind blows through Ala Moana Shopping Center, the world’s largest open-air shopping center. When I say large, I mean massive! There are more than 350 shops and restaurants to explore, including multiple department stores, first-class boutiques and over 160 dining options. This is a unique shopping excursion in paradise, and don’t forget to enjoy the hula performances.

The Byodo-In Temple, located at the foot of the Ko’olau Mountains in Valley of the Temples Memorial Park, welcomes people of all faiths to worship, meditate or simply appreciate its beauty and history as a non-practicing Buddhist temple. Built in 1963, the Byodo-In Temple is a Hawaii state landmark and one of the states’s best kept secrets.

Lanikai Beach, also known as Kaʻōhao Beach, is a world-renowned beach on the windward side of Oahu, Hawaii, in the town of Kailua. Its known for its soft, white sand, turquoise waters, and views of the Mokulua Islands. The beach is located within a residential neighborhood and is popular for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and relaxing.

The Makapuu Point Lighthouse Trail is a popular, paved, and relatively easy 2.5-mile (roundtrip) hike on Oahu, offering stunning panoramic views of the coastline, offshore islets, and the historic Makapuu Lighthouse. Its known for being a great spot for whale watching during migration season (November - May) and for enjoying sunrise. The trail is fully paved, making it accessible for various fitness levels, including families with strollers and young children. Expect breathtaking views of the windward coast, Koko Head, Koko Crater, and the offshore islets, which are seabird sanctuaries.

The little country store on the North Shore! This nut store offers free samples of various macadamia nut flavors, including garlic onion, cinnamon sugar, and honey roasted, as well as Kona coffee. They have friendly and welcoming staff, beautiful scenery, and a fun atmosphere with wild chickens roaming the grounds.

Hungry? Stop by this established, graffiti-decorated pit stop for a variety of shrimp plates & a garlic hot dog option. There’s also Romy’s and Fumi’s nearby! Kahuku Shrimp Trucks can’t be beat.

While everyone touts “Matsumoto’s Shave Ice”, located on the north shore, as the king of shave ice, Kenny and I swear up and down that Mountain Magic is, by far, way better! It might not look impressive from the outside, but this little shave ice truck has so many flavors you’re not gonna be able to choose just one. The ice is so silky smooth, fine, and is the perfect way to cool off on a hot summer day. Don’t forget to add the ice cream, sweetened condensed milk, and mochi balls to your mound of delicious ice. You won’t regret it.

In the mood to see some hawaiian waterfalls? Have a refreshing swim in the pool under these scenic falls in north O’ahu in Waimea Valley. You can get there via an easy 1.5-mile hike through a beautifully landscaped paved path.

You can walk out a ways on the rocky point and enjoy watching the waves crash up against a large rock outcropping with an arch. Parking here is minimal. This place is an excellent photo opportunity!

 Lāʻie Point State Wayside

This majestic 150-foot waterfall, cascading down a vertical drop into a serene pool below, is the centerpiece of a vibrant tropical rainforest teeming with unique flora and fauna. If the scenery feels oddly familiar, it’s because Manoa Falls Trail served as a filming location for both the classic “Jurassic Park” and the more recent TV series “Lost.” Wander through the captivating rainforest environment that once graced the silver screen.

Oʻahu’s North Shore is known for a lot of things, but the 1.6-mile (2.7 km) stretch of Kamehameha Highway through downtown Haleʻiwa is at the center of it all! From surf shops to little boutiques, to great local food and so much more, there’s honestly too much to mention in just a few sentences! I recommend stopping in while you’re hungry and staying for a while to do some walking, as there are truly so many little places to check out in this beautiful small North Shore town.

Germaine’s “backyard-style” luau offers a more intimate setting and a casual atmosphere. The drums and sounds of island music will do their job to get you into the right mood. Audience participation is encouraged throughout the evening with the women being taught the traditional “Hukilau Hula” and the men trying their hips at the Tahitian “Ami.” After the impressive Imu ceremony, in which the kalua pig is unearthed from the traditional rock-filled underground oven, followed by a prayer (pule) to the ancient gods, the buffet is opened. Help yourself to the multi-course Polynesian buffet that will make your taste buds dance. You’ll find traditional island delicacies as well as American favorites. This is your chance to taste the island staple Poi, a paste made of cooked and pounded taro roots. The Koko Head hike (also known as the Koko Crater Trail) on Oahu is a notoriously steep and challenging climb up 1,048 steps (old railway ties) to the summit of an extinct volcanic tuff cone, offering panoramic views of Hanauma Bay and the coast, requiring plenty of water, sturdy shoes, and sun protection, and is popular but can be dangerous due to its steepness. Key Features Steps: Over 1,000 railway ties leading up the steep incline. Difficulty: Considered difficult due to steepness, but manageable if you pace yourself and take breaks. Views: Stunning panoramic views of Hanauma Bay, Diamond Head, and Honolulu. Location: Southeast Oahu, near Hanauma Bay. Tips for Hiking Water: Bring plenty (2-3 bottles) and snacks. Footwear: Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good traction. Sun Protection: Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential. Pace Yourself: Take breaks on the way up; the incline gets steeper. Time: Go early morning to avoid heat and crowds. Safety: Be cautious as its a popular rescue site; slippery when wet.

Soar up to 1,200 feet above the Pacific for jaw-dropping views of Waikīkī, Diamond Head, and Oʻahu’s south shore. Safe, thrilling, and unforgettable. When Kenny, the girls, and I did this, I was so impressed with the photographs that we got back. There is a crew member who is constantly taking pictures during your entire experience so you have those memories available on a USB drive for you to download and keep forever.
