Are the times listed on your website in the central or eastern time zone?
This portion of the Upper Peninsula is in the eastern time zone, and as a result all event times which are listed are EST.
How crucial is carpooling to the ceremony?
For those who haven't been to the Mouth of the Huron before, it's one of the most scenic public locations in the entire Upper Peninsula (heck, Midwest) which hasn't been formally developed for tourism. As a result, parking is very much "however you manage it" among the trees and along the forest dirt roads of that space. In all honesty, we struggle to estimate how much immediate space near the ceremony location there is for parking. It truly is one of the major question marks of the day, and likely will be until we are in the moment. Therefore, we ask you to do your diligence to car pool from L'Anse if possible. Ultimately, the fewer vehicles at Mouth of the Huron will result in shorter walks and easier getting around for all involved (you).
Do I need to bring my own chair to the ceremony?
Yes, you need to bring your own chair to the ceremony. Comfortable beach / lawn chairs are encouraged.
When should I plan to be at the ceremony location?
Please allocate enough time to be at the Mouth of the Huron, parked, and have your chair set up by no later than 12:30p.m. ET on Friday, September 20th. We suggest being on the road out of L'Anse by 11:30a.m. ET. (Earlier is encouraged, especially if the weather is pleasant.)
Where in the world is the Mouth of the Huron and how do I get there?
The Mouth of the Huron is a Lake Superior beach & forested area ~40 minutes / 25 miles northeast of the town of L’Anse, Michigan. The easiest way to navigate to the location is to type in the Lat / Long coordinates: (46.911, -88.044) into your mapping app and search / navigate. The following directions should match what your mapping app instructs:
From the downtown area of L’Anse, leave town on Main St. / Skanee Rd. and go ~20 miles to a three-way stop.
Turn left on Portice Rd. and go 2 miles to a four-way stop.
Turn right on Huron Rd. and go 3.7 miles to where the road comes out at Lake Superior. You have now reached the Mouth of the Huron and will be instructed on parking from there.
(Nearly the entirety of Huron Rd. is dirt road. By U.P. standards it is a good dirt road and any vehicle will be capable of traversing it to the parking area for the wedding.)
Are wedding events outside?
It is fully anticipated for the ceremony & reception to be outdoor events, relatively dry weather permitting. Normal weather this time of year for the Upper Peninsula is daytime highs in the mid-60s & nighttime lows in the mid-40s. However, especially next to Lake Superior there may be a cool breeze off the lake. There will be barn & tents at the reception location, with space heaters provided.
What is the back-up plan for the ceremony if the weather is bad?
We anticipate having the wedding at the Mouth of the Huron as long as it is forecasted to be mostly dry at the time of the ceremony. If the forecast is looking wet (either rain or snow), the ceremony will be moved to Saints Peter & Paul Lutheran Church in Houghton, MI at 1:00p.m. Friday, September 20th. Please check the Ceremony Location page here on our website the day before to confirm the ceremony location.
What is the dress attire for the ceremony & reception?
Understanding that these events are anticipated to be outside, we want you to be comfortable during our wedding day, even if that means dressing more “casual” than what you typically consider for a wedding. Therefore, please plan to be checking the weather in the days leading up to the wedding, and plan to dress accordingly for spending a good part of the day in the temperatures forecasted.
Where to lodge?
See the Lodging tab of our wedding website for recommended places to book lodging. At this time we are not planning to reserve a block of rooms anywhere, and suggest you book early to ensure your most desired choice of lodging.
What do you recommend doing with the rest of the weekend?
We envision our guests making a long weekend of our wedding. In addition to the ceremony & reception events on Friday, we have some optional (or To Be Determined) events planned for Saturday and Sunday. Otherwise, please see the Things To Do tab of our wedding website.
