University of Virginia

University of Virginia

The University of Virginia was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson. The university's original grounds, the Academical Village, are still the heart of the university. UVA is the only American educational institution that is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The school's original Board of Visitors included three US Presidents who were also Founding Fathers of the United States: Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe.

The Lawn

The Lawn is the original site of the University of Virginia, remains the center of the academic community, and is surrounded by housing for students and faculty.

Framing the two long sides of The Lawn are ten unique Pavilions, where select faculty both reside and teach classes. In the "backyards" of the Pavilions are ten gardens. Like the Pavilions, no two gardens are the same. Also on The Lawn are 54 student rooms. Being selected to reside on The Lawn as a final year undergraduate is one of the university's most prestigious honors.

Kristen and Luke's wedding ceremony will take place in the backyard garden of Pavilion VIII.

The Rotunda

The Rotunda was built in the 1820s and modeled by Thomas Jefferson after the Pantheon in Rome. Originally the university library, The Rotunda is now a multifunctional building used for social events, meetings, classes, and as a study space.

Found at the head of The Lawn, The Rotunda is the most famous building at UVA and can be found on the official university logo.

Luke proposed to Kristen on the marble steps of The Rotunda.
