Our Wedding

How We Met (According to... Whom?)We each wrote our own version of how we met without comparing notes. Bit of a “he said/she said” situation, minus the courtroom. Whose is actually correct? I guess we will never really know but at least the ending is the same.

His version: Our story began in the traditional manner, drunk at a wedding. In May 2016, Laura boarded a plane to the United States from Australia to attend the wedding of Paul and Becca. Little did she know, she would be boarding that very same plane a few weeks later to come back and visit me. But I think I've already gotten a little ahead of myself. Our story is my favorite story to tell. It started a few weeks earlier, at the Kezar sports bar in San Francisco. I had been out all day with my highly productive roommates drinking beer and playing disc golf for 6 hours when I decided to meet up with Paul and Becca and watch the Warriors game at a bar. Paul failed to mention that Laura, Becca's extremely attractive Australian friend, had already arrived from Australia a week early and was conveinently newly single. When I arrived with my roommate Trevor, who was absolutely tanked, I saw this stunning girl sitting with Paul and Becca I went into complete panic mode. You see, I was the best man in this wedding and had been briefed on all suitable bridesmaids and was NOT mentally prepared to start spitting game this early let alone my current state of slight inebriation. But my roommate Trevor, with the aid of 9 beers, was. The entire time at the bar, Trevor drunkedly did his best to impress, while I played the long game of not saying a single word for 2 hours. Who knew Laura was into mutes? After surviving our first meeting by going into stealth mode to avoid saying something stupid, I got my second chance a few days before the wedding while cutting out the menu's for the big day. In typical Laura fashion, she had a lot to say about my scissor technique and pretty much everything else I did. What she wasn't prepared for, is me finding my voice to throw it right back at her. After a few hours of flirting, I came home to my roommate James on cloud nine and looked at him and said "I think the hot Australian girl...likes me?????" to which he replied enthusiastically "YES KYLE". Fast forward to the big night for me (oh, and Paul and Becca) I gave a solid speech in a sharp suit with a lot of sarcasm that was hook/line/sinker for the Aussie. A few beers and champagnes later, I couldn't help but notice Laura following me around the dance floor all night. A quick trip to the after party bar lead to some very dangerous celebratory shots for my recent college graduation. Luckily, the great wingman Todd, asked Laura to distract me which she interpreted as take me to the dance floor for our first kiss. I'd like to think this was no accident and she understood the assignment. We were inseperable for the next 48 hours which was an adventure in itself. It included a lunch with my parents, mexican flea market, broken down truck, and a few ice creams in San Francisco.

Suit, Speech, and Sarcasm

Her version: Our story is a romcom script to a tee - and I love it.&nbsp; I first met Kyle at a sports bar in San Francisco. He was a mute, who made no eye contact (still not sure how this occurred knowing Kyle today). I ended up talking to his friend Trevor who was sitting next to me absolutely hammered, ordering every ‘extra’ ingredient possible to his hamburger as a sign of his machoness. I then met Kyle a second time, a few nights before Becca’s wedding as we had both been brought in for manual labour of cutting menus. He spoke. But we really just made fun of each other and ridiculed each other's cutting skills. Mine were better.&nbsp; At the wedding I knew very few people, so I hung out with the bridesmaids and nominated Kyle as my drinking and cookie buddy. We were entrusted to get each other drinks and cookies. After a few dances, I realised that Kyle could also become the protector of my phone as I had no pockets, this new trusting role, quickly developed into being my bus buddy on the way to the after party. When we arrived at the after party, his brother Todd asked me to distract Kyle as he wanted to buy a round of shots to celebrate Kyle graduating college. This I could do easily. I went right up to him on the dance floor and kissed him. Boom. Easily distracted. My job was complete.&nbsp; The following day our film script just got more creative. I kept Kyle to his word that he would drive me back the next day. We got in the truck.&nbsp;He forgot his suitcase. We picked up some hydrolite (pedolite). We had our first lunch date with his mum, Pam and step dad, Bob in tow. Nothing like a first date with the in-laws. We stopped at a flea market and for some unknown reason bought a penguin phone charger. We got back in the truck and started driving down the highway only to hear Kyle go ‘Oh no’. The truck started to choke and hop. We broke down. Kyle's phone had died. My phone was useless as I didn’t have international roaming. But luckily we had just bought this charger, which plugged into his laptop (which was also on the fringe of death) to call a tow truck. After a few hours we got towed by a lovely Ethiopian guy who was talking to us about the wedding he just went to with almost 1000 people, he then turned to us and said ‘when are you two getting married?’. We looked at each other and just went with it. We told him that we were looking into places but hadn't set a date yet. We carried this story onto our uber driver who had to drive us all the way back to San Francisco. When we finally arrived back at Becca’s and Paul's, after 8 hours of chaos, we calmly informed them that we too would be getting married.&nbsp; And the rest my friends, is history.

PAUL SENSIBA

Master Bain. One of the most subjectively beautiful men in the world. Never far from his english roots, you can find him sinking piss in a pub and trying to tell you that blood sausage is actually really good and not disgusting. A really good friend who accepted me into the group immediately when I moved over. You can always trust you won't go hungry or drinkless around this beautiful man. Priveledge to have him by my side.

PETER BAIN

Diggy. The Lord of Fire. Like a moth to a flame, he will happily ensure the fire will go out safely at 5am. Always down for any activity and a nice live music session. A man with a belter of a pub voice and overall just a great human. It was an honor to be at your side for your wedding and I appreciate you returning the favor. 

MATTHEW DIGBY

Jamie. The 2nd oldest of the group. The one that makes me feel slightly less old. The most welcoming selfless friend you could ask for. Welcomed me into the group without hesitation. Man with great style whom always appreciated when I put on house music bangers. Great friend with wisdom beyond his years.

JAMIE MEYER

Phoebe has been my best friend since Year 7. She is kind, caring and extremely generous, a trait passed down from her parents who became my second family during high school. Every year, Bruce, Patsy and Phee would invite a group of our friends for a week down at their holiday house in Philip Island. These getaways remain some of my most treasured memories from high school.  
Phoebe has always been a straight shooter, steering me in the right direction – especially when it came to boys. She believed that this would never work as Kyle lived too far away. After 10 years, it looks like I can finally prove her wrong.  I am so lucky to call Phoebe a friend, and thrilled to have her by my side. 

PHOEBE MEYER

Bella and I have been friends since Year 1. Going through junior school, Bella was known to have the best lunchbox in the class (hello dunkaroos!) and a bizarre need to eat a tomato like an apple, must be the Italian in her. As kids, Bella and I loved to play 'The game of Life' when we got to the spot to 'get married' we would place the game on hold and design our dream wedding dresses.  1 wedding down and 3 kids later, this day will be the final piece missing from our childhood dreams. 
Bella is sweet, incredibly thoughtful and has a tendency to thumb herself in photos. Bella and Kyle have bonded over their fear of bears and she kindly laughs at all his jokes – even when they’re bad.  I am beyond grateful to have Bella by my side. 


ISABELLA BAIN

This exotic combination of a Kiwi Queenslander was brought into our group by Matthew, and aren’t we glad he found her. Rachel has brought haberdashery skills we never knew we needed and a love of Costco and crafting to match my own. Rach and I have bonded while drinking cocktails and chatting away as the boys sit by the fire and smoke some meat at ungodly hours of the morning or night. 
Rachel is a seasoned camper, always organising our group with the best camping dishes, while still trying to convince me that camping with no toilet is ‘not that bad’. Rach spoils our girls as if they were her own, coming over for playdates or afternoon craft sessions with Addie. I am thankful she was brought into our life, and proud to have her by my side. 


RACHEL DIGBY

The cornerstone of this whole event. It is because of Becca that this wedding is occurring. Nearly 10 years ago I was honoured to be a part of Becca’s bridal party as she married Kyle’s brother Paul. 
Becca and I met at Deakin University while she was studying abroad from San Diego. Our friendship flourished as we ventured the East coast of Australia together driving from Sydney all the way to Cairns. Upon her return to the US, I decided I needed to study abroad in San Diego and thus we got another 6 months together. She was my mother hen, setting me up in my dormitory, and taking me out with her every weekend. We spent the 4th of July together in Lake Tahoe, where she met my future brother in law. 
While I haven’t seen her in forever, I can't marry Kyle without this beautiful girl, that I soon get to call my sister, by my side.
