Float the Dolores River's Hanging Flume
Sunday, June 11, 2023
11:00 AM–4:30 PM
Attire: Sun hats and water shoes
The Skinny:
We’ll be paddle boarding and boating along the Hanging Flume section of the Dolores River to celebrate our marriage! The Flume is an easy, seven-mile float of about 3 hours with light, class II rapids. We’ve seen a baby do it!
Where is this?
The Dolores River cuts laterally across the aptly named Paradox Valley before plunging into Mesa Canyon through a fissure of red rock sandstone and shale, created by a collapsed salt dome 150 million years ago. Shortly downstream of the confluence with the San Miguel River, pine beams and iron hoists dot a streaked, vertical sandstone cliff on river right. They are all that remain of a 12-mile open water chute, or “flume," used in the late 19th century to pressurize high volumes of water for use in gold mining. The flume is long defunct, but the beautiful canyon remains. We have seen big horn sheep, deer and elk, hawks and eagles, otters and trout. It's a really special place and we would love to share it with you.
Other logistics:
The launch is roughly an hour upstream from the wedding venue with limited parking. We will plan to use shuttles so we can leave vehicles at the take-out and access the launch together.
Please reach out if you are interested and let us know if you'll need to be outfitted with river gear.
